Chapter 1
"I'm pregnant," Alex Warren, my ex-boyfriend, said.
When I heard Alex say that, the fork in my hand nearly slipped.
I tried to speak gently, "Alex, are you feeling okay?"
Maybe... something was wrong with his head?
Alex could tell I didn't believe him.
He gave me puppy eyes, clutching his belly dramatically.
"Sophie, does that mean you don't want to take care of me and our baby?" he whined.
I was totally dumbfounded.
Excuse me? What was he even saying?
How could a man be pregnant?
*****
I was seriously considering whether to take him to the ER or just straight to the psych ward.
Suddenly, Alex frowned and grabbed his stomach.
"Ugh..." he groaned.
I felt a jolt in my chest.
Instinctively, I asked, "What's wrong? Is your stomach bothering you again?"
Alex's stomach had always been kind of sensitive.
The doctor said it was because he never ate a balanced meal.
Back when we were together, I noticed he was either munching on carrots or leafy greens. He wouldn't touch meat at all.
I used to tease him, "You eat so many veggies than rabbits."
"Who knows, maybe you'll wake up as a rabbit one day."
As I said that, I couldn't help but imagine Alex as a fluffy bunny, nibbling on carrots.
I clutched my stomach, laughing so hard that I couldn't breathe.
But Alex just stared at me, dead serious. "I really am a rabbit."
"Didn't I tell you before, Sophie? You really forgot?"
As he spoke, his eyes started to water.
If I said no, he'd probably start bawling right then and there.
Oh, right.
He really did say that one night.
But I just figured he was goofing off, pretending or something.
Seriously, people couldn't just turn into rabbits, right?
I was about to protest, but when I met those watery eyes, the words just died in my throat.
So I quickly changed my tune.
"Of course I remember."
"You're my adorable little bunny, Alex."
"I was just kidding around earlier."
As soon as he heard I remembered, Alex instantly wiped away his tears and grinned.
He dove into my arms, snuggling up to me. "I knew you'd never let me down, Sophie."
Just thinking about those sweet times made me smile without even realizing it.
But when I saw Alex clutching his stomach, looking like he was in real pain, I snapped back to reality.
I hurriedly handed him the stomach meds I'd just found in the drawer.
I grabbed him a glass of warm water. "Here, take your meds. You'll feel better in no time."
"It's not my stomach," Alex muttered, biting his lip. "It's the baby. The little one is kicking me!"
I stared at his almost flat stomach, totally skeptical.
I wanted to ask if he was serious right now.
Forget the fact that he was not even pregnant. If he actually were, the baby wouldn't start kicking until at least four months in.
He even said the baby was kicking him.
Honestly, I bet it was just his stomach messing with him again.
Alex had no clue what I was thinking. He was still totally lost in the joy of feeling the baby kick.
Then, as if something just hit him, he looked at me with hopeful eyes. "Sophie, do you want to feel it?"
Feel what?
Before I could even process what was happening, Alex slowly lifted his shirt, revealing those almost-perfect abs.
Was I seeing things, or...
He'd definitely put on a little weight.
But those abs still had me totally hooked.
My brain was still overthinking whether I should touch him, but my hand had already made the decision.
Next thing I knew, my hand was already on his abs.
Holy crap!
They felt just like last time.
His abs felt nice.
"Sophie, um... are you done?" Alex asked.
Alex's voice jolted me back to reality.
I pulled my hand back, super embarrassed. "Uh... Yeah."
Alex's face was bright red, and his voice was so soft that it was almost impossible to hear.
"So... does this mean you're okay to accept the baby and me?" he asked.
I scratched my head, sighing helplessly,, "But... we're not together anymore."
Alex's eyes instantly welled up, and he looked like he was about to cry any second.
I didn't dare tease him anymore.
I quickly added, "But we could get back together if you want."
Duh.
My ex literally showed up at my door begging to get back together.
He even went as far as spinning some crazy story about being pregnant just so I'd take responsibility.
How could I ever let him go?
Besides, I'd been thirsting for Alex's body ever since we split.
I was about to drool.
