Chapter 2
"Our baby was five months old, and you saw his photo. Because she doesn't want me to give you a child, our baby died. Don't you want to uphold justice for our baby?" I questioned Tom.
Tom kept his mouth shut and embraced me.
He knew that what Jenny had done was a crime.
She would get legal sanction as long as he made up his mind to sue her.
Tom was clear about that, but he didn't take action.
I knew that he wouldn't hurt Jenny as long as there was another solution.
Therefore, he came to appease me. He wanted me to spare her from the severe law.
Tom thought that he knew me well.
He thought that he could get a happy ending as before.
He thought that I would forgive him as long as he humbly took care of me and gave me some empty promises.
What a pity that I didn't fool myself anymore!
Before I was discharged from the hospital, Tom personally came to pack my belongings.
He was wearing a neat suit with part of his sleeves rolled up. It seemed he had just come from his company.
In his beautiful eyes, there was an affectionate smile. The young nurses were completely swept off their feet.
My husband was handsome, rich, and loving, so the bystanders were envious of me.
Only I knew that this marriage was a torment for me.
I didn't want to see Tom at all.
That day, I got rid of Tom and went to the hotel where Jenny had killed my baby.
My plan was to collect surveillance footage as evidence and then send Jenny to jail.
However, the surveillance cameras in the hotel failed to capture that Jenny had pushed me down the stairs or that I had lain in the pool of blood.
I tried to find some witnesses, but nobody remembered the tragedy that day. There, I sniffed a conspiracy.
Tom must have pulled a few strings. He could do anything for Jenny.
In the deserted street, Tom blocked my way with his car.
In a custom-made suit, he got out of the car and stopped right in front of me.
When I thought of running away, he read my mind and pulled me into his arms.
The bobcat in his car jumped onto my thigh. It had been adopted by me before my pregnancy.
Because of my pregnancy, it had been sent to the pet store by Tom for foster care.
Now that my baby was gone, I embraced my cat hard. Stroking my cat, I couldn't help thinking, 'If only my baby were still alive.'
Tom gazed at me, leaned over, and kissed my hair.
"Michelle, I keep your favorite flowers in our bedroom. I moved the cat's little house into your bedroom. From now on, Babe will keep you company," he said.
Babe was the name I had given to my cat.
The house where Tom and I lived was in a good location, and it was expensive.
I didn't like it because Jenny said that Tom had bought it to help improve her monthly performance at the estate agency.
I didn't get out of the car.
I said to Tom without sparing one glance at him, "I will move out. I will send you the draft divorce agreement after I get it ready. Let's part friends."
Tom held the car door. The afterglow shone in his eyes, and the sadness there was unmistakable.
He took my hand and coaxed in a soft voice, "Honey, don't talk silly. I won't let you move out."
I had to admit that Tom knew better than I about how to work on a marriage.
He kept sweet-talking me if I was mad at him.
His humbleness was like the kite whose string was in my hand.
I couldn't help but think that he led a loose life because I didn't pull the string in time.
Was it my fault?
Given my deep love, the confines of marriage, and a sense of responsibility, he shouldn't betray me even if he couldn't get over Jenny at all.
However, he did cheat on me.
When I packed my belongings at home, I found that I had bought so many things in the past years.
The cloakroom was full of my clothes, and the shoe closet was filled with my shoes. Even the tableware in the kitchen was my favorite brand.
It was impossible for me to take so many things away in one go.
Therefore, I chose the stuff I needed right away.
When I pulled my suitcase away, Tom once again gripped my hand and blocked my way.
His gaze at me contained sadness and frustration. "Honey, you are a poor sleeper. I am afraid that you can't sleep if you move out."
As always, he was so thoughtful.
Sadly, his thoughtfulness wasn't my exclusive privilege.
