Chapter 3
To stop Adam from actually going through with some over-the-top public claiming ceremony, I decided to drag him to the Blackwood pack house for work.
He was the Alpha of the Blackwood pack, and even if he was acting a little out of it lately, he still had to show up. Otherwise, the veterans in the pack would definitely stir up trouble.
As his personal secretary, I never left his side.
At the Blackwood pack house, Adam slipped right back into his usual icy demeanor.
He sat in his big office chair, and even though he had no clue what those complicated reports meant, his Alpha vibe alone made sure nobody dared to mess around.
I lounged on the couch, munching on snacks and enjoying the view of him at work.
Just then, a woman dressed to the nines pushed the door open and walked in.
It was Sophia Bennett, the pack's Beta and one of Adam's old admirers.
When Sophia saw me, a flicker of disdain crossed her eyes, but she quickly put on a bright smile and walked over to Adam.
"Alpha Adam, this document needs your signature," she said.
She bent over on purpose, her neckline so low it was practically begging for attention, and her perfume was so overpowering I couldn't help but sneeze.
Adam frowned, leaned back a bit, and said coldly, "Put it down."
Sophia froze, clearly not expecting Adam to brush her off like that.
Adam had always been distant, but at least he'd been polite about it before.
"Alpha Adam, are you feeling unwell? Want me to give you a temple massage?" Sophia asked, laying it on thick with fake concern.
She reached out, aiming for Adam's head.
I was just about to stand up and mark my territory, but Adam moved faster than I did.
He got up, walked right over to me, and pulled me into his arms.
"Ren, my head hurts," he said.
His voice instantly turned soft and a little playful, almost like he was being cute.
Sophia froze, her eyes practically popping out of her head. "A-Alpha Adam?"
Adam didn't spare her a glance. He buried his face in my shoulder and mumbled, "Her perfume stinks. It's making me feel sick."
I barely held back my laughter and patted his back.
"There, there, you'll be fine. The Beta's leaving now," I said, trying to sound soothing.
Sophia's face was practically red with anger. She gave an angry stomp and stormed out of the office, fuming.
As soon as the door closed, I burst out laughing.
"Adam, did you see Sophia's face just now? It was priceless," I said, still giggling.
Adam looked up at me, his eyes sparkling.
"Renee, did I do well just now?" he asked.
"You did great," I said, grinning.
I wrapped my arms around his neck and planted an exaggerated, playful kiss on his cheek.
Adam pulled me in even closer, his eyes smoldering with intensity.
"So is there any chance for more rewards?" he murmured.
Adam's "rewards" were always pretty exhausting.
We hadn't actually mated yet, but we'd pretty much done everything else, things we probably should and definitely shouldn't have.
Even with his memory gone, I'd noticed Adam had a real talent when it came to certain things.
For example, he always knew exactly how to find my sensitive spots, then hit me with those big, puppy-dog eyes that made it impossible for me to turn him down.
"Renee, I want to see you in that dress," he murmured, his voice thick with longing.
He pointed at the new backless nightgown I'd just bought, his eyes pleading with me like a puppy desperate for a treat.
It was a gift from my bestie, Amelia Hayes, who promised it would seriously heat things up between mates.
My face went bright red. "It's cold. No way I'm putting it on."
Adam pressed his lips together, looking like he was about to start bawling.
"But I know you'd look incredible in it. Just let me see it once, please?" Adam pleaded.
I was powerless to resist when he looked at me like that.
Half an hour later, I dragged myself out of the bathroom, wearing that barely-there nightgown.
Adam was sitting on the edge of the bed, and the second he saw me, I heard his breath hitch.
His eyes burned with a wild, hungry intensity, like an Alpha wolf locking onto its prey.
"Renee..." His voice was so deep and sexy.
I fidgeted with the hem of my nightgown, feeling awkward. "Okay, you've seen it, right? I'm gonna go change now."
But just as I turned to leave, Adam's strong arms pulled me right back.
He hugged me from behind, his hot chest pressed against my cool skin.
His hands roamed over my waist, making my whole body shiver.
"Adam, what are you doing?" I asked, my voice trembling.
"Renee, I'm burning up," he murmured, his breath hot against my ear.
He leaned in close, whispering, his teeth grazing my earlobe.
My knees nearly buckled. "If you're burning up, go take a cold shower."
"No, I just want to hold you."
He spun me around and claimed my lips with his, pulling me into a deep kiss.
This time, the kiss was more intense than ever.
He kissed me like he wanted to consume me, possessive and wild.
I was so dizzy from his kiss that my mind went completely blank.
Just when I thought things were about to get heated, Adam suddenly stopped.
He held me tight, his body trembling.
"Renee, please get better soon," he blurted, completely catching me off guard.
I blinked, confused. "Who needs to get better? Aren't you already fine?"
Adam didn't say a word, just hugged me tighter.
At that moment, a strange feeling washed over me.
Did he really lose his memory?
