Chapter 4
As I was enjoying the show, a pair of big hands slipped under the covers.
I looked up and met Matthew's deep brown eyes.
He was wearing a low-cut bathrobe, his hair still damp. Obviously, he'd just gotten out of the shower.
I frowned, about to ask what he was up to.
A sudden chill brushed against my ring finger.
I paused and then glanced down. There was a massive diamond ring sitting on my finger.
The design looked like the one from the jewelry store we visited earlier.
"Didn't you keep insisting you wanted the biggest one?" Matthew whispered in my ear, his voice low and husky.
Before I could respond, his burning kiss claimed my lips.
The live chat exploded.
[Oh my god, I can't believe Sandra used her dad to corner Matthew into giving her the ring that was meant for Lilith.]
[Watching Matthew forced to act all cold and bitter makes my heart ache.
[And what's worse is, Lilith hasn't gotten her turn with him yet, but this damn Sandra has had her way with him so many times.]
[It's okay. Matthew's playing along with Sandra. His heart belongs to Lilith only.]
It had been a while since we hooked up.
Judging by the live chat, Matthew and Lilith were still platonic.
So, it meant Matthew was still pure.
Once that clicked, I stopped holding back.
I went all for it.
Right then, Matthew's phone rang.
He reached over to silence it, like always.
But when Lilith's name popped up on the screen, he stopped dead.
He froze.
Even though I already knew how this would end, a pang of sourness still hit me.
My heart twisted with jealousy.
I rolled over. "Go ahead, answer it."
After a brief pause, Matthew answered the call.
I couldn't make out what was being said, but I could faintly hear Lilith crying on the other end.
Matthew immediately got up.
Once he was dressed, he came back over, bent down, and pressed a gentle kiss to my forehead. "Sorry, something urgent came up."
I ignored him.
After a moment, the door clicked shut.
The live chat went wild.
[Lilith got cornered by a client and forced to drink, and Matthew dropped everything to save her. He ditched Sandra without a second thought. So satisfying!]
[Tonight's the night. Lilith gets drugged, and Matthew has to save her. And you know the drill, wink, wink.]
[Even though Matthew and Sandra aren't divorced yet, Lilith manages to get pregnant tonight, despite all the drama. That's her ticket to the top.]
I was taken aback.
My heart felt like it was suffocating, ready to burst.
But then, a sudden, inexplicable rage flared up inside me.
I didn't see why I should let these homewrecker fangirls in the live chat dictate my life.
I was not buying into this twisted fate. I was going to put a stop to all of it.
I pulled out my phone and dialed Matthew's number.
Again and again, I called, but he never answered.
The live chat started roasting me.
[Damn, what's up with Sandra? She's always so high and mighty, never calling Matthew, and now she's blowing up his phone like crazy. Is she reading the chat or what?]
[So what if she is? Matthew and Lilith are destined to be together, and their baby is about to show up. Her days are numbered.]
[Exactly! Matthew's busy getting it on with Lilith. No way he's picking up for her.]
I froze, placing my hand over my heart.
There was still a dull ache.
I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but I was no fool.
At this point, all I could do was make sure I got the most out of this.
I took a deep breath, called my lawyer, and offered him ten times the usual fee to rush through a divorce agreement and get it to me as fast as possible.
I spent the whole night in the living room, drained and restless.
Early in the morning, I finally heard the door unlock.
Matthew came in, massaging his temples, and stopped in his tracks when he saw me.
He raised an eyebrow. "Up so early? You usually sleep till noon."
The unfamiliar scent of his body wash lingered in the air, and any last bit of hope I had disappeared.
I stayed silent, sliding the divorce papers over to him without a word.
I said coldly, "Matthew, let's end this."
Matthew stopped in his tracks.
His eyes lingered on my face for a long moment. Unlike the last three times, when he'd gone along with it, this time he asked, "Why?"
I looked up at him. He was still so composed, like nothing could shake him.
Suddenly, I felt exhausted, like all the fight had left me.
I didn't even have the energy to wonder why he wasn't asking if I was sure this time.
I slammed the divorce papers right in his face.
I shot back, "You know damn well what you did last night. You even showered, using that fruity body wash you can't stand."
Matthew stood there for a moment, picked up the divorce papers from the floor, and started flipping through them, his frown deepening with every page.
I wondered if he thought I was asking for too much.
I looked away, and my voice faltered a bit. "You're the one at fault here, so taking seventy percent is more than fair, right?
"I'm not walking away empty-handed this time. Besides, we never signed a prenup..."
