Chapter 2
"I didn't even know how I got out of the hospital.
"
All I remembered was that before I left, Ryan had an arm draped around Grace's shoulders and brushed a kiss against her cheek. "Lucas, you guys don't bother coming over. Grace is taking care of me."
The moment I got into the black Mercedes, the tears I'd been holding back for so long came pouring out.
Looking at the side of Lucas's face, so much like Ryan's, I grabbed his collar, hit him a few times in frustration, then buried myself in his chest and bawled.
Just a little while ago, our parents had still been sitting together talking about our wedding, and Ryan and I had even set our engagement party for three months from now. So why had everything changed after his car crash?
He forgot all about our engagement and mistook my best friend for his girlfriend.
"I cried for a long time, then wiped all my tears and snot onto his black suit before suddenly freezing.
Oh crap. I was so upset I actually did something this stupid.
Lucas Foster was famous for keeping women at arm's length."
He was three years older than Ryan and me. When we were kids, he used to take us out to play all the time. Later, he went abroad for college, and we hardly crossed paths after that.
Everything I knew about Lucas came from Ryan. "One woman dumped a drink on Lucas on purpose to flirt with him, and he poured the whole bottle of beer right over her head.
"Another one was even bolder and practically threw herself at him. Lucas shoved her away, and she hit the floor flat on her back."
"I secretly glanced up at Lucas and saw his hand slowly coming down toward my head.
He wasn't going to twist my head off just because I'd wiped tears and snot on his suit, was he?
"
While I sat there bracing myself, that big hand only patted my head gently. I let out a breath of relief.
"Lucas had always been cool and quiet, and I was in a rotten mood, so neither of us spoke the whole ride.
"
"Before I got out of the car, Lucas stopped me and looked straight into my eyes as he said each word slowly:
""Anna Summers, don't be sad. You'll definitely find someone who truly loves you."""
I didn't understand what he meant, but after thanking him, I jogged back into the house.
At dinner, I came across Grace's new post on my feed. It was another photo of her feeding Ryan. Both of them were smiling like they were the happiest couple alive.
The caption said: [Watching you enjoy the food I made makes me so happy.]
I finally snapped and commented: [Enjoying someone else's leftovers that much, huh? Yeah, I guess you really are happy.]
A few seconds later, the post was gone. It disappeared so fast that I didn't even notice there hadn't been a single like or comment on it besides mine.
I tossed my phone onto the table, but my mom immediately noticed something was off with me. "Anna, what's wrong?"
