Chapter 1
Chapter 1 Marrying My Cheating Ex's Brother
When my boyfriend woke up after the car crash, I was just about to walk over. But then I saw him gazing at my best friend like she was his whole world as he called out softly, "Baby."
I froze on the spot.
Watching them hold each other like a couple madly in love, I forced back my tears and grabbed the arm of the man beside me. "Honey, now that your brother's awake, let's head home first."
The doctor said Ryan Foster had injured his brain in the crash, which was why his memory was messed up. He'd mistaken my best friend, Grace Lane, for his girlfriend. Yeah, right. Like I'd believe that.
"Ryan and I had grown up together. When we were kids, I used to chase him around the yard when he was running around butt-naked.
"
I confessed to him when I was eighteen, and we'd been together for seven years. How could he possibly forget me?
But standing outside that hospital room, I had no choice but to face reality.
"Grace patiently fed Ryan porridge. He bit down on the spoon and gave her a playful wink, and they looked just like a couple in the honeymoon phase.
"
"My fists clenched. I wanted to storm in, snatch that bowl away, and dump it all over their shameless faces.
How could they betray me like this?"
"Suddenly, I remembered the first time I introduced them. ""Ryan Foster, this is my classmate and best friend, Grace Lane.""
"
Wearing that same lazy grin, teenage Ryan had said, "Grace Lane? Funny. We even used to go by the same nickname."
Grace lowered her head and said nothing. I quickly smacked Ryan and told him to stop teasing her.
Grace was quiet and shy, and other than greeting each other, she and Ryan had barely spoken. So when the hell did they get together behind my back?
At that moment, Grace reached over with a napkin to wipe Ryan's mouth, but he pulled her into his arms and called her that again, all tender and sweet: "Baby." My eyes started stinging with tears.
A deep, smooth voice sounded beside me. "You're not going in?" I looked up. It was Ryan's older brother, Lucas Foster.
Dressed in a sharp suit, he glanced into the room without a flicker of emotion.
I sniffed, grabbed his arm, and whispered, "Help me."
Even though I tried to act calm, my steps still came out unsteady. When I reached the hospital bed, I deliberately raised my voice: "Honey, now that your brother's awake, let's head home first."
Hearing me, Ryan let go of Grace. The moment he saw my hand looped through Lucas's arm, he frowned. I didn't want to say another word. I just wanted to get out of there, until Lucas slipped his fingers between mine.
"Ryan, get some rest. I'm taking Anna home first." Lucas said.
Ryan said nothing. He just stared at our clasped hands as his face darkened all at once.
