Chapter 4
When Emily came to, she was already lying in bed.
Andrew was lying next to her, one arm still wrapped tightly around her.
As soon as she moved, he woke up. His gaze was full of bloodshot veins as he looked at her.
He naturally reached over to feel her forehead, then let out a relieved sigh, his voice hoarse. "You had a fever. It lasted all day and night, but it finally broke."
Emily realized it made sense. She'd spent the whole night out in the cold wind. No wonder she ended up with a fever.
Her health had been pretty bad ever since she fell into the sea that time.
She opened her mouth, her voice raw and painful. "Water."
Andrew immediately went to get her some water.
Emily nestled in his arms, drank most of the water, and looked utterly exhausted.
Andrew held her close, his fingers lingered on her cheek, full of concern. "Why didn't you tell me you were feeling sick? You finally managed to gain some weight, and now it's all gone again."
Emily gave a faint, sarcastic smile, then slipped back into a hazy sleep.
Her illness knocked her out completely.
For an entire week, Emily was in a daze, barely awake most of the time. Whenever she opened her eyes, Andrew was always there, never leaving her side.
But one day, when she finally opened her eyes, she instinctively glanced to her side only to find the space beside her empty.
The bed beside her was cold.
She could faintly hear voices coming from downstairs.
Emily slowly got up and made her way downstairs.
On the other side of the door, the two people at the entrance didn't notice her.
Andrew's voice was tinged with surprise. "What brings you here?"
Olivia was wearing a white dress, looking up at Andrew with a delicate and vulnerable expression. "You haven't picked up my calls or answered my texts all week.
"Are you having second thoughts again? Don't you want me anymore?
"Andrew, I miss you so much. Please don't ignore me, okay?"
Andrew frowned. "You should leave now. Emily's still sick, and I don't want to stress her out. If you need anything, call —"
Before Andrew could finish, Olivia stood on her tiptoes and threw herself into his arms, pressing her lips to his.
Andrew instinctively reached out, trying to push her away.
But Olivia clung to him, her arms wrapped tightly around his neck.
The taste of her bitter tears in the kiss made his resistance waver, his hands hesitating.
Little by little, he stopped fighting it and started responding, turning passive into active.
After what felt like forever, they finally broke apart, both of them gasping for air.
Olivia stared at him, her eyes burning with intensity. "Andrew, stop fighting it. You know you can't let me go.
"You don't love her anymore. Staying with her out of duty is hurting all three of us."
Andrew's voice was strained, full of pain he tried to hide. "I can't..."
Emily suddenly flung the door open.
Olivia and Andrew both looked up at Emily in shock.
Andrew's face was full of panic. "Emily..."
Emily shoved past him and grabbed Olivia's hair, forcing her to tilt her head up.
Without hesitation, she raised her right hand and slapped Olivia hard across the face. "You bitch. How dare you come here and act so shamelessly!"
She didn't hold back, smacking Olivia over a dozen times.
The hallway was filled with the sound of slaps and Olivia's cries.
"Enough!" Andrew shouted, his patience finally snapping.
Emily was suddenly shoved aside, her head slamming hard against the cold, hard wall.
Her forehead was damp, warm blood slowly trickling down.
Through the haze of blood, she saw Andrew rush over, gently pick Olivia up in his arms, and rush out of the hallway. "Olivia, don't be scared. I'll take you to the hospital."
