Chapter 2
At Mercy Heart Hospital, the ER was a madhouse.
A multi-car crash had sent waves of injured patients flooding in.
Andy, the legendary surgeon, was holed up in the VIP suite, personally patching up Unity's forehead. Her cut was barely three-quarters of an inch long.
"Andy, did I ruin my face?" Unity asked.
Unity stared at her reflection in the mirror, tears streaming down her face.
"If Chelsea finds out you saved me and ignored her. she'll hate me forever," Unity choked out.
Andy frowned, carefully placing a bandage on her forehead.
"Don't overthink it," Andy said.
His voice was cool, but there was a clear soft spot for her in his tone.
Andy explained, "It was an emergency. You were right by the door, and with your blood-clotting disorder, even a tiny cut could've been deadly.
"Chelsea was in the back seat. The car wasn't crushed, so she could get out on her own."
Unity sniffled, a flicker of smugness in her eyes, but she still acted timid.
She said, "But the car blew up afterward."
Andy cut her off, a hint of irritation in his voice, "She's not that dumb.
"Chelsea's got a real knack for staying alive. She would've bailed way before the explosion.
"She's probably holed up somewhere, waiting for me to come find her."
He pulled out his phone, a dozen missed calls lit up the screen.
None of them was from me.
It was his assistant and the head nurse blowing up his phone.
Annoyed, he swiped past them and opened WhatsApp.
At the top of his chat list, the divorce agreement was sitting there, quietly waiting for him.
It had been sent the moment the crash happened.
Andy's face darkened on the spot.
"Same old drama," he muttered.
He let out a cold laugh, tapping hard on the screen as he sent a voice message.
"Chelsea, how many times are you going to pull this stunt? You even faked your death to make me feel guilty?
"Get your ass back to the hospital right now. Unity's a wreck because of you.
"If you don't show up and apologize, don't even think about me ever talking to you again!"
But the message vanished into the void.
I did not reply, explain, or cause a drama.
That eerie silence only made Andy's anger burn hotter.
The head nurse burst into the room, sweating bullets and looking pale as a sheet. "Dr. Covington!
"There's a critical patient in the ER, penetrating abdominal injury, massive blood loss, and her blood type is RH negative.
"The blood bank's running dry, and the director needs you to take charge right now."
Andy shot an impatient look at Unity, who was still looking all scared and fragile.
"Let the deputy chief take care of it. Unity can't be left alone. She's really unstable right now," Andy said.
The head nurse was on the verge of tears.
"But the deputy chief is already in surgery! The patient's in really bad shape, and... and she might be pregnant," the head nurse stammered.
Andy's hand froze.
For some reason, his heart skipped a beat.
But in the next instant, Unity suddenly grabbed her chest, started hacking and wheezing, struggling for air.
"Andy, my chest feels so tight. Am I having internal bleeding?" Unity whimpered, her voice shaky and desperate.
Andy immediately dropped the stethoscope, caught Unity as she swayed, and shot the head nurse a death stare.
"Can't you see I've got an emergency right here? I'm a doctor, not a miracle worker. I decide who I save. Get the hell out!" Andy barked.
The head nurse was stunned by his outburst, gritted her teeth, and bolted out of the room.
Andy turned back to comfort Unity, but the chill in his eyes only grew colder.
If Chelsea was not injured, he would teach her a lesson after he found him.
