Chapter 2
I stared at those pills right in front of me, and suddenly, the tears just started pouring out. I couldn't hold them back anymore.
Now I understood everything. He'd been stopping me from getting pregnant like this all along.
Those were hormone pills, and my hormones have always been out of balance.
Seeing me break down, Kylan quickly set the pills aside and reached out to gently wipe my tears, his face full of worry.
"What's wrong? Is your appetite off, or do you just not feel like eating? Come on. Be a good girl. This is for your own good," he coaxed.
His words were all coaxing and reassuring, just trying to calm me down.
"Didn't you always want a baby?" he continued, still playing the caring role. "We can try again once you're healthy."
He kept spinning lies, doing everything he could to hide the truth.
As I listened to him, it felt like all hope inside me had burned away.
I knew it now. He no longer loved me.
No matter how hard I tried to hold onto him, nothing could change that cold, cruel truth.
I numbly swallowed those "vitamins" he claimed were good for me.
Kylan wrapped his arms around me, still trying to comfort me. "Sherry, if it turns out you really can't have a baby, we can always adopt later on. We'll love them just like our own, alright?"
He was always so caring. If I hadn't witnessed what he did at the hospital myself, I never in a million years would've suspected him.
After he finished talking, he tried to wipe the sweat off my forehead, but I turned away, dodging his hand.
"I just need some time alone. You should go get some rest too," I said.
I was scared I'd lose control and start screaming at him, so I forced myself to curl up under the blanket, holding back the urge to break down.
Kylan hesitated for a second. Then he gently tucked me in, kissed my forehead, and quietly left the room.
With only the nightlight on, I couldn't see his face clearly. All I felt was how unfamiliar he seemed.
The instant he handed me those pills, every sweet memory we'd ever shared shattered into a million pieces.
All that romance and affection between us was just a lie.
The next day, I gathered up all the baby supplies and toys I'd prepared and buried them in the yard.
Those tiny shoes were hand-stitched by my mom herself, just for the baby.
When the dirt was finally smoothed over, my chest felt so tight that I could hardly catch my breath.
When Kylan got home from work and heard from the maid what I'd done, he let out a long, heavy sigh.
Then he pulled me into his arms.
"Please don't be so sad, Sherry," he said, his tone soft and consoling. "I've arranged for a solemn blessing from a respected priest for our lost little ones."
I got into the car, feeling numb. When we arrived at the church, Kylan was just about to open the door for me when the driver handed him his phone.
"Mr. Lane, the director is on the line. He says there's an urgent script change that needs your personal approval..." the driver said, his voice tinged with urgency.
Kylan's gentle expression vanished, replaced by clear impatience. He cut the driver off with a wave of his hand. "I made myself clear. Today is for Sherry, no work calls. Since when do I need to personally approve a simple script change?"
But the driver wasn't about to give up. He quietly pulled Kylan aside and whispered something in his ear.
I stood there, watching them closely, my mind swirling with questions.
What kind of script change could possibly put Kylan in such a bind?
A moment later, Kylan came back to me, his whole demeanor different. There was a hint of hesitation and unease in his voice.
"Sherry, I'm sorry. There's a really important script adjustment at work that I have to take care of. Can you wait for me at church? I'll be back as soon as I'm done, okay?" he said.
I stared into his eyes, trying to find any trace of honesty.
But all I saw was nervousness and that shifty look.
Just as he turned to leave, I caught sight of an earring gripped tightly in his hand.
I'd seen that earring on Rachel before. It was a unique, unforgettable design.
When I saw it in Kylan's hand now, my heart sank as all kinds of bad thoughts flooded in.
What else could it be? It had to be that secret lover of his. Why else would he run off in such a hurry?
I couldn't help but scoff inside, but on the outside, I kept my cool.
"If it's work, then go ahead. I'll be fine here by myself, no need to worry about me," I said.
When he heard me say that, Kylan actually let out a sigh of relief.
He hurried off with the driver, not even sparing me a glance the whole time.
Of course, he completely missed the shattering of my heart and the devastation in my eyes.
There was a time when Kylan would cancel all his work and social plans just to be with me.
He always said being with me was what mattered most, but now he'd rather ditch me for another woman.
As the car drove off, I let the priest know I couldn't make it today. Then I grabbed a cab and quietly followed after them.
The car pulled up in front of a high-end apartment complex.
As soon as Kylan stepped out, a woman rushed over to greet him.
Kylan stood there with a cigarette dangling from his lips, his face dark with fury.
"How many times have I told you? Don't call me today. If you dare show up in front of Sherlyn, don't blame me for what happens next," he growled.
