Chapter 4
The dazzlingly handsome Lucas carefully helped the fragile Renee into the car.
Suddenly, when he saw me walking out with Grace, his face went stiff for a second.
He let go of Renee, whom he'd been carefully helping, and came over to me. His voice was nasty and impatient. "Out of the hospital?"
I'd never been the type to kiss up to someone who treated me like dirt. So I snapped back, "None of your business."
Lucas looked shocked at how rude I was. He stared at me for a moment, then said awkwardly, "Jocelyn, for the sake of the baby you're carrying, I'm willing to forgive everything you did.
"From now on, if you stop making trouble and behave yourself, I'll let you have the baby. And we won't get divorced."
He looked at me with disgust, like he was doing me a huge favor.
I couldn't help laughing. "What are you thinking? In your dreams. Why would I stay married to a cheating jerk like you? What, so I can keep you around for fun?
"Let me tell you something. You don't share a toothbrush, and you don't share a man. Someone like you who can't keep his pants on should just go somewhere and die."
"Jocelyn!" The veins bulged on Lucas' forehead. He looked like he was about to explode.
Then the fragile little thing he was about to help into the car, Renee, said in her sweet, delicate voice, "Ms. Moore, you've got it all wrong. Lucas and I are just friends."
"Friends? What kind of friends spend every night together without caring who knows? What kind of friends have no boundaries, at your beck and call?" I shot back.
I raised my voice so everyone around could hear. "Ms. Jenson, don't tell me you don't want to sleep with Lucas?
"Or maybe you two are already together, and you're just getting off on the thrill of sneaking around?"
A lot of people turned to look. They whispered and pointed.
Renee never expected me to go off like that without caring. She hid her face, looking like she was about to burst into tears.
Lucas felt bad for her. "Jocelyn, you really never learn, do you? Apologize."
"Why should I apologize to the two of you, a cheating bastard and his mistress?" I shot back.
I hadn't planned to get involved with them. They came over to disgust me first.
I'd always been the type to leave people alone unless they mess with me. I didn't know what was wrong with the old me, the one who groveled after Lucas.
But the current me? I was not putting up with that kind of crap.
I gave a sarcastic laugh and looked at Renee, who was wiping her tears. "Ms. Jenson, quit with the waterworks and playing the suicide card every time you want sympathy. If you really wanted to die, you'd be dead already.
"Someone as shameless as you, someone who only chases after a married man, willing to die? Sure. And pigs might fly."
Renee was so angry that she rolled her eyes. I had humiliated her in public like that. She had nowhere to hide her embarrassment.
She started to wobble, getting ready to fake a faint. I stopped her before she could.
I scoffed. "About to pull the fainting act again? Can't you try something new? Are you really that fragile?"
I messed up Renee's plan to fake a faint. I kept going. "You say you and Lucas are just friends. You have no feelings for him. I believe you. So, Ms. Jenson, why don't you swear an oath?
"If you have even the slightest romantic feelings for Lucas, may your face be ruined, and may you never be able to have children for the rest of your life."
Renee was way too guilty to swear. She looked like she wanted to cry but had no tears.
She pushed Lucas away. "Lucas, don't come to me anymore. My business has nothing to do with you."
"Shrew! You vulgar shrew." Lucas' face turned livid with anger as he watched Renee storm off.
He roared, "Jocelyn, you don't know what's good for you. This marriage is over for sure. Even if you grovel in front of me, I won't take you back."
