Chapter 2
After that, for a long time, James and I just fell into a quiet truce.
We never mentioned that video again.
James would go with me to my prenatal checkups.
He kept bringing me gifts.
He went out of his way to spoil me.
It almost felt like he was still the James who used to be crazy about me.
But deep down, I knew something had changed.
Like last night, when James suddenly pinned me down.
"The doctor said we can be intimate again now that you're four months along," he said.
Then he covered my face with kisses, one after another.
I used to love it when James kissed me.
But out of nowhere, when I caught a whiff of another woman on him, even though my morning sickness had long passed, my throat tightened with nausea.
I felt so sick I couldn't take it anymore. I pushed him off me and barely made it to the bathroom.
The sound of my retching filled the bathroom.
James followed me into the bathroom, his brows furrowed as he watched me.
"Didn't the doctor say you wouldn't have morning sickness after three months? Why are you still throwing up?" he asked.
My stomach was twisted in knots, so I didn't bother answering him.
James looked irritated. He paced around the bathroom, then headed to the closet, grabbed his suit jacket, slipped on his watch, and didn't even bother with his tie.
Glancing at me still hunched over the toilet, he said, "I've got a contract to sign. I'm going to the office."
He didn't say a single word to comfort me.
After that, he just walked out the door without another word.
I watched him walk away, the sound of the toilet flushing echoing in the bathroom.
Tears streamed down my face.
So, something really had changed.
Back then, even the smallest tear from me would tear James up inside.
But now, the only thing he did for me was pretend to be decent when he went out to see that girl.
He told me he had a contract to sign at the office.
Then he left.
