Chapter 4
While I was still hazy, the nurse began to remove the pain pump connected to me.
I jolted awake and quickly grabbed her hand.
"I'm Alexander's wife. I just had surgery. Please, I'm begging you, don't take away my pain pump." I pleaded desperately.
But the nurse just yanked her hand away, scorn clear on her face.
"Seriously? If you were really Mr. Storm's wife, do you think he'd just drop you here and go fussing over some other woman? Stop dreaming," she sneered.
Once the pain pump was taken away, sharp agony tore through my abdomen and uterus like knives slicing through me nonstop.
Overwhelmed by the pain, I lost all strength and just curled up tightly in a ball.
Through my blurry vision, I spotted Emily on a hospital bed, my pain pump hooked up to her as nurses crowded around, rushing her off to the intensive care unit.
Just before she left, Emily gave me a taunting smile, then deliberately mouthed her message for only me to see.
"You bitch, Alex has always been mine." She mouthed silently at me, her eyes gleaming with smug triumph.
Fury made my whole body tremble as I summoned every ounce of strength, trying to sit up.
But the pain just kept getting worse, pinning me helplessly to the bed.
The door burst open again, and Alexander hurried in, worry written all over his face.
"Lillian, how's Emily doing?" he asked urgently.
I looked at Alexander, using the very last bit of strength I had to beg him for help.
"Alexander, please..." I whispered weakly.
"Alex, I'm so scared." Emily whimpered from across the room.
My feeble, fading voice was completely buried under Emily's sweet little act.
Without hesitation, Alexander immediately turned away and left.
"Lillian, just get some rest. I'll go check on Emily and be right back," he said, not even glancing in my direction, making a promise he never intended to keep.
It felt like my heart was pulverized, ground into dust beneath a giant stone.
Right before I lost consciousness, the last image burned into my mind was Alexander's figure walking away.
By the time they finally hooked the pain pump back up, the pain had already knocked me out for three whole hours.
A young nurse handed me my phone and gently dressed the wound that was still oozing blood.
"Where are they?" My voice was so hoarse, it was nearly impossible to hear.
"You mean Mr. Storm? He left a while ago. His lover kept complaining it was uncomfortable here and demanded to go home."
The young nurse pouted, grumbling in frustration.
"Seriously, just because they're rich. Your injuries are way worse than his lover's. Does he really only treat her like a real person, and you're just nothing?" She muttered.
I listened to the nurse, but honestly, I couldn't even bring myself to correct her.
Even if I tried to convince her I was actually Alexander's wife, it would only make me seem even more miserable and pathetic.
"I've changed your meds and bandaged you up. Just try not to move, alright? If you need anything, go ahead and ring the call bell," the nurse told me softly.
As I gazed around the hospital room that was empty once again, my resolve hardened.
I dialed a number I'd never dared to call before.
I'd had a change of heart.
Alexander wanted to avoid an amicable divorce.
Then neither he nor Emily was going to have it easy.
"Well, look who finally decided to call me."
There was that familiar, lingering warmth in Ethan Blake's tone, like he was always a little too close for comfort.
I answered softly, trying my best to keep my hoarse voice sounding normal.
"Ethan, could you do me a favor and look into something for me?" I asked.
