Chapter 3
Tears sprang from my eyes out of nowhere, streaming down my cheeks in seconds and leaving my hair damp behind my ear.
Not since my mom passed away have I cried with such hopeless desperation.
Alexander looked totally panicked when he saw me crying. He nervously reached out to wipe my tears, his voice soft and filled with regret.
"Lillian, don't cry, okay? I just got a little carried away. I know how much you're afraid of Emily. Starting tomorrow, I'll send her overseas for treatment. I promise, she won't come back to bother you until she's completely better."
Before I could even respond, Emily suddenly lost control and lunged at me like a maniac.
"If you think I'm just dead weight and want to kick me out, then maybe it'd be better if I were gone for good." She screamed, her voice trembling.
Crying uncontrollably, Emily grabbed the IV drip beside me and smashed it to the ground.
She picked up a sharp piece of broken glass and pressed it against her wrist, her tear-filled eyes staring right at Alexander.
"I know Lillian blames me. I'll end it now and pay with my own life for what happened to her child." She sobbed.
Suddenly, a sharp pain stabbed through the back of my hand, and I let out a yelp.
Turns out Emily's wild movement made the IV needle rip right through my vein, and blood started spilling out.
But Alexander didn't even look at me. He was just all anxious, fussing over Emily.
"Emily, that's not what I meant. I just want you to get better, okay?" he said softly, trying to calm her down.
Emily looked utterly devastated, tears rolling down her cheeks like falling petals in the rain.
"Don't bother trying to explain. I already know I'm just dead weight holding everyone back." She choked out between sobs.
Saying that, she pressed the glass shard to her wrist and dragged it across with desperate force.
"Emily," Alexander cried out.
He rushed up, but he was a beat too late. The sharp glass left a gash on her wrist, not deep, but enough for blood to start seeping out.
Alexander held Emily tightly in his arms, his eyes full of tenderness and worry.
"Emily, I'm sorry. This is all my fault. I swear, I'll never leave you, ever," he said, his voice thick with emotion.
Then he spun around and shouted out the door.
"Somebody helps. We need a doctor in here, now."
Watching those two put on their whole dramatic life-or-death act, I just found it all completely ridiculous.
So, this was what Alexander looked like when he actually cared about someone, totally freaking out and losing it.
The nurse walked in, glanced at Emily's injury, and let out a not-so-subtle eye roll.
"Seriously, what's with all the noise? If I'd shown up a minute later, you'd have healed all by yourself," she grumbled.
"Alex, it really hurts." Emily whimpered, her voice sweetly pleading as she clung to him.
Emily's frail, needy tone made Alexander spring to his feet, face clouded with rage and distress.
"Emily said she's hurting, so do something to ease her pain, right now. If you don't, I'll make sure this hospital shuts down for good." Alexander growled, his fury barely contained.
Seeing the nurse still waffling, Alexander went out of the room.
A few minutes later, the nurse got a call from the hospital director.
"Quickly help Mr. Storm's lover with her pain, or be careful, I might fire you," the director snapped.
The nurse's face went wide with fear.
"But we don't have any extra pain pumps right now." She stammered.
"Just take one from somewhere else then. You just need to remember, you can't afford to offend Mr. Storm," the director snapped.
That was the moment I realized that when he said "Mr. Storm's lover," he meant Emily.
And Alexander didn't say a word to deny it. Not once.
