Chapter 3
Series 1 Chapter 3
I spent the night in another room.
Dominic sent only one message.
When you’re done being dramatic, come back.
I stared at it for a few seconds, then turned off my phone.
By morning, the hotel had already begun preparing the rest of our anniversary itinerary.
A private spa appointment.
A mountain-view dinner.
A helicopter tour over the Alps.
And a renewal ceremony Dominic had apparently arranged for the final evening.
I canceled all of it.
The concierge sounded surprised.
“Mrs. Sinclair, are you sure? Mr. Sinclair reserved these months ago.”
“I’m sure.”
An hour later, someone knocked on my door.
A hotel employee handed me a small velvet box.
“This was scheduled for your anniversary breakfast.”
Inside was a diamond ring.
Elegant. Expensive.
A card rested beneath it.
Five years down. Forever to go. — D
I almost laughed.
Dominic could spend a fortune promising me forever.
He just couldn’t give me forty minutes when I needed them most.
I closed the box.
A few minutes later, another knock came.
This time, it was Dominic.
He walked in without waiting for an invitation.
“Why did you cancel everything?”
“Because I don’t want any of it.”
His expression hardened.
“You’re ruining our anniversary over Camille?”
There it was again.
Camille.
As if Camille were the problem, instead of the husband who kept choosing her over me.
I looked at him.
“If Camille hadn’t been on that plane three years ago, would you have delayed it for me?”
His face changed slightly.
“Eleanor, we’ve already been through this.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
He exhaled sharply.
“What happened with the IVF couldn’t be changed.”
“But the flight could.”
Silence.
For one second, he had nothing to say.
Then his jaw tightened.
“You’re twisting the past because you’re angry now.”
I felt something inside me settle.
Not break.
Settle.
Like a door finally closing.
“You should go.”
His eyes narrowed.
“You really want to spend our anniversary acting like this?”
“Yes.”
Dominic stared at me for a long moment, then turned and left.
He didn’t apologize.
He didn’t ask me to come back.
He didn’t even take the ring with him.
And by then, I knew exactly what I would put in front of him next.
