Chapter 3
After the surgery, the moment I regained consciousness, I managed to pick up my phone and call Justin.
At that moment, there was only one thing on my mind. I had to leave him for good.
I called him 107 times straight, but he never answered.
On my 108th attempt, he finally picked up.
But the moment he picked up, I was met with a flood of harsh words.
"Grace, enough already. It's just a kidney. Did you have to blow up my phone like this?" he snapped.
"You owe everything to Lily. If it weren't for you, I would've married her five years ago!" he barked.
That was when I realized just how low and contemptible I was in his eyes.
He was the one who confessed to me back then. So how did I become the one who stole him from Lily?
I got in touch with a lawyer, had the divorce papers drawn up, and signed them right there in the hospital.
Justin, even if I was on the brink of death, I didn't want anything to do with you anymore.
I felt my soul lift and drift straight into Lily's hospital room.
At that moment, Justin was whispering sweet nothings to Lily, completely wrapped up in her.
A nurse burst in, clearly flustered.
"Mr. Sterling, bad news!" she blurted out, her voice shaking.
Justin frowned slightly, set down the oatmeal, and turned to the flustered nurse. "What nonsense are you talking about? Nothing's wrong. Everything's perfectly fine."
"Mr. Sterling, it's Mrs. Sterling. She... She had a massive hemorrhage and didn't make it!" the nurse stammered, her voice trembling with panic.
A flicker of shock crossed Justin's eyes, but then his voice turned icy as he spat out, "Did Grace put you up to this? She's really something. Just because I didn't visit her in 24 hours, she had to pull this stunt?"
"Go tell her to stop playing these little games," he snapped.
Lily lay in bed, looking weak and fragile, all while acting so caring.
"Justin, maybe you should go check on her. I'm fine on my own," she said gently.
"What if... What if Grace really is..." she hesitated, her voice shaking with worry.
"No way. We only took one of her kidneys. What's the big deal?" Justin snapped, his voice cold and dismissive.
"Right now, you're the only one I care about," he added, his tone softening as he looked at Lily.
A smug glint flashed in Lily's eyes.
But just as quickly, she slipped back into her sweet, caring facade.
"Justin, I'm really fine. I can take care of myself," Lily said softly, her voice full of concern.
"After all, Grace is still your wife," she added, her voice gentle yet firm.
As soon as Lily said that, Justin's expression grew even darker.
"Lily, you know I've always loved you," he said, his voice heavy with emotion.
"Lily, just give me some time. I'll end things with her," he said, his voice low and determined.
With that, Justin turned to the nurse. "Go tell Grace that Lily's in a fragile state and I need to look after her. Once she's better, I'll visit her."
Seeing that Justin wouldn't budge, the nurse grew increasingly desperate.
"Mr. Sterling, I swear it's all true!" she blurted out, her voice trembling with urgency.
"Mrs. Sterling has passed away. How can I deliver a message to someone who's no longer with us?" she cried, her voice trembling with desperation.
"During the surgery, we found Mrs. Sterling only had one kidney left," she explained, her voice shaking.
She went on, "At your request, we removed it. So now she has none. She'd just lost her baby and was already weak. After the surgery, she suffered a massive hemorrhage. So..."
"Enough! Tell her to stop with these manipulative games," Justin snapped coldly, dismissing her words.
"If she really is dead, then have her cremated. Don't bother me with this," he snapped, his voice cold and dismissive.
His simple words still stabbed at my heart even though I was already dead.
My manipulative games?
I deserve to die!
I should just be sent straight to the crematorium!
Only at this moment did I truly regret donating my kidney to Justin five years ago, before he even confessed to me.
I rushed forward, desperate to tear the kidney from his abdomen, but the moment my hand reached him, it just went right through.
I had forgotten I was already dead.
I couldn't help but shed blood-tinged tears.
