Chapter 2
My name is Evelyn Page, and I am a mission-taker.
The first time I saw Leon, he stood out like a beam of light.
He had entered Northbridge University at the top of his class, came from a good family, and was strikingly handsome.
Wherever he went, he drew attention.
So when the system told me he was my target, I felt lost. It seemed like an impossible mission.
But success meant I could return to my original world, wake up again, and stand, walk, and dance.
So I gave it everything I had.
The system placed me in the same year as him, though in a different major.
To have more to talk about with him, I signed up for electives in his field.
Before each class, I stayed up for nights at a time, forcing myself to understand the difficult physics material in advance.
Whenever the professor asked a question, I raised my hand eagerly, hoping to leave some kind of impression on him.
Even after the professor learned my name, Leon never once looked my way.
Later, during a field trip to the countryside, we went into the mountains to gather material and ran into a landslide.
Leon was caught off guard and swept away by the mud. I was standing beside him and grabbed him with all my strength.
As we were dragged down the slope together, a sharp rock nearly pierced his abdomen.
"Watch out!" I shoved him aside, and the rock struck my waist instead.
In that moment, I thought that the worst outcome would be dying in this world, my soul returning to my original world, the mission failing, and my life continuing as a motionless body.
But saving a life felt worth it.
Leon carried me in his arms and ran down the mountain, his eyes red.
Along the way, his voice broke as he said, "How can someone be as foolish as you, risking your life to save someone else?"
I forced a smile and teased him. "Because I like you."
He fell silent and did not respond, only urging me to hold on.
At the hospital, he took care of me with meticulous attention until I fully recovered.
After that, we spent three years together as friends. It was not until an incident in our senior year that our relationship finally moved forward.
At that time, his family went bankrupt. His parents both took their own lives and left him buried in debt.
He became withdrawn and despondent, and the friends around him drifted away.
He started smoking and drinking heavily, using alcohol to numb himself and escape a reality he could not bear.
I could not stand by and watch. I grabbed him by the collar and told him to pull himself together.
He looked at me, his eyes filled with confusion, uncertainty, and embarrassment.
After a long pause, he gave a bitter smile and pushed me away. "Why haven't you left me? Aren't you afraid I'll ask you for money?"
"I'm not."
He froze, then suddenly pulled me into a tight embrace. His hot tears soaked through my shoulder.
During those hardest days, I stayed by his side. We finished our studies while trying to build something of our own.
Over time, the way he addressed me changed from "Ms. Page" to simply "Evelyn."
The system informed me that his affection had reached one hundred percent and asked whether I wanted to leave this world.
I hesitated.
Somewhere along the way, I had truly fallen for Leon.
While I was still wavering, he stood before the vast rose garden he had planted himself, stretching across the hills.
There was a light in his eyes, and a fierce warmth behind it. "Evelyn, let's be together. Let's stay together for the rest of our lives."
When I met his gaze, something that had long been buried deep inside me finally broke through.
So even after completing the mission, I chose to stay for him.
I never expected that after he met Hannah, everything would change.
