Joseph Foster had never been good with emotions. In three years of marriage, he never once said, "I love you." When our son was born, he stood off to the side like a stranger and said, "He's not a very good-looking baby." When my father died, he showed up late to the funeral. The first thing he said was that I should go home and change our son's diaper. "The living matter more than the dead," he said. I finally lost it and caused a scene at the funeral. Everyone tried to calm me down. "Joseph was trained in the military. He's not exactly warm, but in every other way he's exceptional. Why make this so ugly?" I stayed silent through the rest of the mourning. On the drive home, I asked for a divorce. What they didn't know was why Joseph had been late to the funeral. He had been busy playing the groom at a wedding for the widow of a fellow soldier.
