Chapter 7
Andrew snapped back to reality, lifted Sophia up in his arms from where she stood barefoot on the floor, and set her back on the bed. His voice was icy as he said, "Sophia, have you forgotten your place?"
He didn't mind the idea of Sophia having his child, but right now, for some reason, he just felt annoyed.
Back when Andrew brought Sophia back from abroad, he set the ground rules. She could only be his girlfriend in secret.
There was no way his family's elders would ever let him marry a college girl with no status or connections.
Seeing that trying to play the sympathy card wasn't getting her anywhere, Sophia switched gears. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him down for a passionate kiss.
Andrew's frustration melted into desire from that kiss. Without thinking, his hand found its way under Sophia's hospital gown, until Emily's warning suddenly rang in his head.
He came to his senses and quickly pushed Sophia away. "Sophia, your health comes first. We can't make an exception."
Sophia just waved it off, her tone casual. "The baby's gone anyway. Even if we sleep together now, it doesn't matter."
With that, she started undoing her buttons, wrapped her arms around Andrew's neck, and pulled him closer until he was right on top of her.
An hour later, Andrew burst into the operating room, carrying Sophia, who was soaked in blood.
Inside the operating room, Emily had just been carried in from the ambulance, and the emergency doctors were getting ready to operate.
Then Andrew burst in, cradling a deathly pale woman in his arms.
The doctor in charge of the emergency surgery recognized Andrew and was about to chew him out for being such a lousy fiancé, leaving his pregnant fiancée home alone.
Good thing the ambulance got here in time. Maybe there was still a chance to save the baby.
But then Andrew spoke, and everyone in the room held their breath.
He shouted, "Save the woman in my arms first. If anything happens to her, I'll make sure this hospital pays for it."
One of the nurses blurted out, "But Mr. Sterling, your fiancée is still in there."
Before she could finish, Andrew cut her off. "I don't care who's in there. The only person I want safe is the one I'm holding."
Emily, lying on the stretcher, heard Andrew's demand. Her heart, which had long felt dead inside, suddenly wrenched so painfully she could barely breathe.
It turned out that loving someone really meant he could do anything for her without hesitation.
With Andrew throwing his weight around, the ER doctors were forced to operate on Sophia first.
As soon as Sophia was out of the room, the doctors rushed Emily in for surgery.
But after everything, Emily still lost her baby.
Emily never expected this baby to come so suddenly and leave just as fast.
She hadn't even had the chance to embrace the happiness of being a mom before fate took her baby away.
Emily spent the next five days in the hospital.
At some point, Candice came to visit her and brought her contract along.
When Candice found out Emily was in the hospital because of a miscarriage, she gave a gentle sigh and said softly, "Your baby will find their way back to you one day."
Emily just nodded in silence.
On the sixth day, she checked out of the hospital and took a cab back to her apartment.
Before leaving for good, she made sure to erase any sign she'd ever been there.
As soon as she walked in, she efficiently gathered all the photos of her and Andrew together, exactly one thousand and one pictures, and threw them into the bathtub along with the pre-taken wedding photos.
She then filled the tub with water, and soon the figures in the photos became blurred.
After leaving the bathroom, she dug out all the gifts she'd once prepared for Andrew, plus all the fancy bags and jewelry he'd bought her. She packed everything up and scheduled a pickup to have it all taken away.
After spending the whole afternoon sorting everything out, Emily checked her bank app and saw her balance go up. She let out a wry, bitter laugh.
At least she got something out of all those wasted years.
By the time she finished packing, the apartment felt hollow and deserted.
Emily closed her suitcase, took the keys from her pocket, and set them down on the coffee table in the living room.
As she was waiting for the elevator with her suitcase, she suddenly heard a man and a woman talking in the stairwell.
"Andrew, Dr. Rivers is being so dramatic. It was just a little test before the wedding, and she's making such a big deal out of it? She actually moved out.
"Tomorrow's the wedding. If she doesn't show up, how are you supposed to get married?" It was Sophia.
Andrew's voice was low and frustrated. "I've spoiled her so much, she doesn't even know what really matters anymore. If she doesn't show up before the wedding tomorrow, then you'll be the one I marry."
Hearing Andrew's words, Sophia's tone turned cheerful. "Andrew, I'm happy to help you out. I'll never cause you any trouble."
Hearing Andrew's plans for the wedding, Emily couldn't help but let out a wry laugh.
It turned out she was never his only choice. The wedding will go on just fine without her.
She didn't want to hear any more. She turned around, stepped into the elevator, and left the building for good.
