Chapter 6
"My child is not a bastard." Emily choked out, her voice shaking with fury and pain.
She bit down hard on her lip, trying desperately to scramble out of the bathtub.
But before she could even get her hands on the edge, Andrew grabbed a fistful of her hair and shoved her head under the water.
She choked, swallowing mouthfuls of water, her lungs burning with the effort to breathe.
Even as she struggled to breathe, Andrew wasn't about to stop.
Emily fought with everything she had, but then she heard Andrew picking up his phone right next to her.
"Sophia, I'll make you some nutritious bone broth later to help you recover. Stay in the hospital and be good, listen to the nurses," Andrew said, his voice soft and gentle.
Hearing that gentle tone, Emily couldn't help but remember how Andrew used to spoil her just like that.
It turns out that his love for everyone was so passionate.
Emily lost all strength to fight, swallowing mouthfuls of cold water in despair, the chill numbing her from the inside out.
Just when she thought Andrew was really going to send her and her baby to their graves, he suddenly let go of her shoulder.
"Do you know what you did wrong?" Andrew asked, his voice cold and commanding.
He stared at her, his face stern, waiting for her to answer.
Emily coughed hard, spitting water onto the floor. She was trembling all over, one hand protectively covering her belly. "Andrew, do you remember what I told you before we became a couple?"
Andrew didn't say a word. He'd obviously forgotten.
Emily parted her lips. "I said I would never let anyone else come between us. If you ever betray me or stop loving me, I'll leave you forever. We won't ever see each other again, not in this life, not in the next."
Andrew flinched, his attitude softening in an instant. "Emily, what are you talking about? How could you ever leave me? We're about to get married."
With that, Andrew crouched down and gripped her icy hand. "I just wanted to test if you were truly loyal to me."
Hearing his flimsy excuse, Emily managed a strained smile.
He used to panic if she so much as scraped her finger, but now he could watch her almost drown without batting an eye.
Men's hearts really did change so easily.
She pulled her hand away and leaned on the wall for support as she got to her feet.
Just as she tried to move forward, a heavy ache suddenly pulled at her lower belly.
Everything went dark all at once, and the room spun wildly around her.
She was about to beg Andrew to call for help when, instead, she heard his anxious voice through the phone right beside her. "Sophia, don't be scared. I'm coming back to you right now."
Without another look, Andrew walked out on Emily, slamming the door behind him.
As his hurried footsteps faded away, Emily bit down on her pale lips, barely managing to drag herself back to the bedroom.
She found her phone and called 911 right away.
Night fell, thunder rumbled, and lightning lit up the sky.
Andrew rushed back to the hospital, making it just in time before the downpour started.
He'd barely pushed open the door to Room 9 when Sophia leapt off the bed and flung herself at him.
"Andrew, I'm terrified of storms and thunder. Thank God you're here with me," Sophia said, her voice trembling as she clung to him.
Ever since Andrew got together with Sophia a year ago, she'd always pull this trick to keep him close whenever it rained.
Andrew never minded keeping her company in the past.
But this time, his mind was somewhere else.
He couldn't even describe how he felt. His thoughts were all over the place.
Just thinking about the way Emily stared him down and said those words made old memories come flooding back.
Emily had always been terrified of thunder since she was a kid. Whenever a storm hit, she'd burrow under the covers and sing to herself, trying to give herself some courage.
When Andrew found out about her secret fear, he took it upon himself to be her protector. Every time it rained, he'd show up at her door without fail.
But now, he couldn't even remember how many rainy nights had passed where he hadn't gone back to keep her company.
Back then, Emily would always act all cute and beg him to come home early.
But now, his phone didn't even buzz with a single message from her.
Noticing that Andrew was ignoring her, Sophia frowned, a trace of annoyance in her voice. "Andrew, do you think I'm not good enough to have your child?"
