Chapter 1
Serena Hale had a childish boyfriend who never took responsibility for anything and was always caught up in partying, chasing girls, and living it up.
Blake Chester always said he was young, acting spoiled, and always throwing a tantrum.
He'd said, "I'm still young. I don't want to get married.
"Serena, you have been waiting for me for three years. Can't you wait a little longer, please?"
But Serena had no choice this time. She was pregnant.
When she took the pregnancy test report to talk to him for the last time, she saw a girl in Blake's arms.
He shot her an exasperated look, like he couldn't believe her choices.
He demanded, "Why didn't you come to me?
"Chloe, would you rather marry a random man than me, right?"
He paused and buried his head in Chloe Bennett's neck.
Blake's voice trembled with a mix of frustration.
He choked up, "It's not that I don't want to get married. I've been waiting for you all the time. Chloe, you're so heartless...
"I could marry you, I could give your family a lot of money. Why can't you choose me?"
Serena clutched the test report tightly and suddenly understood.
She realized, 'So it's not that he doesn't know how to be responsible. It's not that he's immature.
'It's not that he can't get married, it's not that he's still young...
'Turns out, all his maturity and responsibility are given to others.'
Serena trembled uncontrollably. Her mind went totally blank.
She looked at the unfamiliar Blake, who methodically handled the mess for Chloe and calmed her emotions.
As soon as Chloe got into the car, Blake stood outside and called Serena.
The phone rang several times before Serena answered with shaking hands.
Her voice was low and a bit muffled. "Hello?"
Blake said with excitement, "Serena, I want to bring someone home to live with us.
"She is pitiful, so could you help her out a bit?"
Serena paused for a moment, then finally asked, "Who is she?"
What Serena wanted to ask more was what their relationship was.
But for the sake of the baby, she didn't ask him.
Blake chuckled and acted all spoiled like he always did with her.
He replied, "Don't worry about it. I'll be angry if you keep asking.
"Just look after her well."
At this moment, Serena's heart was flooded with sadness.
She pursed her lips tightly, trying to hold back, but the sting of hurt crept up her nose, and the feeling of sadness threatened to spill over.
After a long time, Serena finally asked, "Blake, when are we getting married?"
But Blake had hung up on her.
He was always like this, avoiding or coquettishly covering up when he faced difficult questions.
Serena stuffed the pregnancy test report into her bag. She took a deep breath, wiped away her tears, and walked home.
She felt that at least they had to know about her pregnancy.
It wasn't about pushing Blake to make a decision. Serena should let the girl know that she and Blake had a baby.
By the time Serena finally came back home, exhausted in both body and mind, it was already past eating time.
She was hungry but could smell the tempting aroma of food coming from the kitchen.
She pressed a hand to her belly instinctively as she walked in, only to hear laughter getting closer.
Blake had his sleeves rolled up to show off his strong forearms, obediently wearing an apron as he fried steaks.
Chloe was by the side, her cheeks flushed as she ate the steak Blake had cut up for her.
Neither of them noticed Serena standing quietly at the kitchen door.
Chloe lowered her head. For a moment, she finally looked up at Blake with affectionate eyes.
She said with a smile, "It's really been...
"I haven't eaten what you made for a long time."
As she spoke, tears fell onto the plate.
Blake hurriedly tried to wipe her tears, but was stopped in his tracks by a single word.
"Blake." It was Serena, calling his name calmly.
Blake held back, fighting the urge to close in on Chloe. Instead, he turned to Serena, complaining in his usual spoiled tone.
He asked, "Serena, why are you just coming home now?"
Serena was so hungry that her lips had lost all color. She could barely speak, her voice weak and shaky.
And she suffered from low blood sugar.
But Blake, always used to being taken care of by Serena, had never known.
Blake only saw that Serena's hands were empty, then he couldn't help but gripe.
He said coldly, "Serena, I said I was going to bring a guest back. Why didn't you buy anything for her?"
But honestly, what really let Serena down wasn't those little complaints. It was that Blake could cook.
And he was good at cooking.
But she had never eaten a meal cooked by him.
For every anniversary, every Valentine's Day, every candlelit dinner. Serena was the one who cooked and prepared everything herself.
Just because he said he couldn't cook, but loved the warmth of home-cooked meals.
Now, he was carefully cooking delicious food and giving another woman home-cooked warmth.
How ridiculous!
Serena simply laughed through her tears.
