Chapter 3
If Javier agreed, the baby and I would live easy for the rest of our life. The baby would be born with a silver spoon in his mouth.
Javier's wealth came from three generations of the Graham family. Honestly, they'd got cash practically pouring out of their pockets.
This time, Javier stayed quiet even longer. But in the end, he turned back and nodded slightly. "Fine."
He was dead set on suicide. After Helene dumped him, he'd given up on everything and just wanted to die.
But I wasn't like that. The baby inside me didn't want to die either. We both wanted to live, and live well.
Javier realized I was making sense. Instead of handing his inheritance to those relatives who hated him, he figured it made more sense to give it to his kid.
Javier didn't care about the cash, but the kid might need it someday.
In the end, he caved to me again.
When he hopped back over the railing, I reached out to steady him. "Slowly, please."
I was worried he might slip and fall. If that happened, the inheritance I was banking on for my kid would vanish.
Of course, there was more to it. Javier was actually a good guy, and he was super responsible. I didn't want him to die. I wanted him to stick around, to live.
Once Javier was back to safety, he took off his coat and draped it over my shoulders. "It's windy tonight. You're pregnant. Don't catch a cold. That'd be a real hassle."
I nodded and pulled the coat tighter around my shoulders. It carried a faint, pleasant scent, like some kind of body wash, with a clean note that reminded me of jasmine kissed by morning dew.
After Javier had his assistant audit all his assets, he called in a lawyer and signed the papers right in front of me.
According to the agreement, no matter what happened to him, everything he owned would go to the baby I was carrying.
If, for some reason, the baby didn't make it, then all his wealth would end up with me. And until the kid was old enough, I'd be the one managing it all.
Just like that, I went from a total nobody to one of the richest ladies in the city. I moved into Javier's mansion, got to ride in his luxury cars, and had a chauffeur take me everywhere.
At home, the maids cooked for me and even gave me foot massages. I was decked out in designer brands, feasting on all kinds of delicacies.
Even though I wasn't Javier's wife, the Graham family practically put me on a pedestal. After all, their future earnings all depended on me.
Talk about leveling up thanks to my kid. This was the ultimate example.
When his relatives found out, they totally lost their minds.
They even barged into my place and Javier's office, causing a scene and making trouble for him every way they could.
Javier had to wrangle with them for ten straight days just to shut them up.
During those ten days, I got a front-row seat to what real power moves look like. Javier handled everything with ruthless, no-nonsense tactics.
First, he leaked all the dirt he'd been sitting on, driving a wedge between Uncle Liam and Aunt Macy.
Uncle Liam and Aunt Macy started fighting so hard they were headed straight for divorce. With all that drama, they didn't have time to mess with us anymore.
Next, he handed the cops solid proof that his cousin had been embezzling company funds. His cousin got locked up, and was looking at a few years behind bars.
As for his troublesome Uncle Otto and Uncle Charles, Javier was worried they'd come after me.
Given the uncles' capability, just cutting off their cash flow simply won't do. And so, Javier banished them to some remote overseas branch. It was the same as exiling them.
Once he'd handled everything, Javier took a shower, threw on his favorite black suit, slipped on the watch Helene had given him, and made his way back to the rooftop.
As he walked past me, he shot me a grin and said, "Good evening! The baby needs plenty of nutrients, so remember to eat more every day. You're looking way too thin."
He thought that this time, I'd be satisfied for sure and wouldn't show up on the rooftop to mess with his suicide anymore.
After all, I had everything I'd ever wanted.
Now he could finally go ahead and kill himself without any guilt holding him back.
But he had no idea just how deep my ambition and desire really ran.
Out on the rooftop, with the night wind swirling around him, Javier sat down in that same spot again, his feet dangling over the edge.
Suddenly, he realized the concrete under him wasn't icy and hard anymore. I'd had someone cover it with a soft cushion.
As for the terrifying drop below? I'd ordered a giant safety net to be set up, so if he tried jumping, he'd just bounce right back up, not getting even a scratch.
He turned around and saw me standing there. It was such a familiar sight.
He shot me a look, half annoyed, half amused. "What are you up to now?"
