Chapter 4
Just then, my phone buzzed with a message from William.
He texted: [Got tied up with a few business partners. I'll come find you soon.]
I replied: [Alright.]
I wasn't about to go make a scene in front of Ethan just to rub it in his face.
Honestly, playing childish games like that wasn't my style.
Maybe it was because I'd just talked to Ethan, but suddenly, my stomach churned with nausea, leaving me a bit unsettled.
I took a sip of water, hoping it would help, but the uneasy feeling just wouldn't go away.
Just then, a taunting voice rang out behind me.
A female voice said, "You don't look so good. Want me to get my husband to come fuss over you?"
I spun around and locked eyes with the person, only to be met with a glare full of spite.
She clearly hadn't come in peace.
It took me half a second to realize who she was—Sophia, Ethan's wife.
I'd never even heard her name until today; it had just popped up while I was digging around earlier.
She was actually two years younger than me, but standing in front of me now, she looked so run-down she could've easily passed for five years older.
Maybe it was just the pregnancy hormones acting up, but I found myself feeling a hint of sympathy for her.
I kept my cool and said, "Nothing is going on between me and Ethan. Besides, I'm already married."
Sophia looked at me like I'd just said the most ridiculous thing she'd ever heard.
She sneered, "Let me guess, you're just hanging around till your divorce is final so you two can play house together? You homewrecker—what makes you think you're entitled to a happily ever after?"
Sophia was practically spitting venom at me now.
I frowned and said, "Let me say this again—I couldn't care less about your husband. Whatever mess is happening in your marriage has nothing to do with me."
But Sophia suddenly lost it and screamed at me, "How can you say it has nothing to do with you? If it wasn't for you, my whole life wouldn't have gone to hell."
As she screamed, I caught a cold flash—a knife gleaming in her hand.
Sophia raised the blade and charged straight at me.
"Die!" she yelled.
While she was off guard, I snatched up the tablecloth and flung everything on the table right in her face.
Sophia staggered, totally losing it, her breakdown getting even worse.
She shouted, "I gave him my whole heart, every bit of me was for him. Why does he have to treat me like this?"
Her voice rang out so loud that the security team at the party came rushing over.
Thank God I was wearing flats because of the pregnancy—I escaped to a safe zone in no time.
The guards tackled Sophia to the ground.
She kept screaming, "You all deserve to die. All of you!"
A crowd of onlookers gathered around Sophia, murmuring to each other, their contempt and mockery plain as day.
Ethan came over after the commotion erupted. He looked down at Sophia, who was pinned to the floor by security.
Seeing her shrieking and utterly losing it, Ethan regarded her as if she meant absolutely nothing to him.
He demanded, "Who let this lunatic in here? Get her out—now!"
Then he walked right over to me.
Right then, Thomas gently laid a coat over my shoulders, the warmth almost catching me off guard.
He asked, "Are you okay?"
Seeing this, Ethan looked like he'd just been slapped—total disbelief flooding his eyes.
He demanded, "You betrayed me?"
