Chapter 4
"Hey! Your boyfriend, Vincent Sterling, got hit by a car while he was out delivering food. You need to get to the hospital, quick!"
When I got there, Vincent was lying in bed, looking totally fine and wide awake.
When he saw me, his frown disappeared. "Lynn, you're here."
I gave him a once-over and only spotted a bandage on his ankle, barely wider than my palm.
"If I'd come any later, you'd probably be healed already," I said.
He scratched his head. "Sorry, Lynn. I passed out, and the paramedics used face ID to unlock my phone and called you without asking."
I put my hands on my hips. "Why didn't they call Selena? She's the one you're dating now, isn't she?"
I was so pissed. I'd just stuffed myself, then sped over here and ran up the stairs, and now I had a side stitch.
I was pregnant, for crying out loud!
Vincent's smile faded, his expression turning a little bitter.
He explained, "In my contacts, you're still saved as 'Baby.'"
I took a deep breath and didn't say anything else.
As I was heading out with my bag, I ran right into Selena, who had hurried over.
She gave me a chilly smirk, didn't throw any shade at me for once, and even escorted me to the hospital entrance.
As I opened the car door, she stood on the steps, looking down at me.
"Lynn, tell me Vincent... is he not good in that department?" Selena asked, her voice dripping with curiosity.
I stared at her, eyes wide.
Without thinking, I touched my belly.
Did Vincent get so broke that not only did his hygiene go downhill, but even his skills in bed took a hit?
Come on, that can't be right.
I instantly pictured Vincent's eight-pack abs and those defined muscles on his arms and chest.
Every time, that deceptively gentle exterior would give way to a possessive, relentless energy that seemed to have no end.
I was honestly confused, but I put on the kind of look that says, 'Now you know what I've been dealing with.'
"Even with the pills, he barely makes it three minutes," I said.
My voice was lazy, but there was a world-weary edge to it.
She just stared at me, too stunned to say a word.
I leaned in, keeping the momentum. "Seriously, I just don't get it, what do you even see in him?
"Is it just his looks? Because honestly, he's not all that.
"Or do you think he's some kind of diamond in the rough? Come on, he's so broke he can barely take care of himself.
"Sigh," I said, giving her shoulder a pat. "You just caught him at the wrong time, that's all."
Selena's expression shifted, and she let out a laugh, swatting my hand away. "You really are so basic."
I pressed my lips together, watching her face. I had nothing left to say, so I just turned and waved her off.
"You're the classy one. Hope it works out for you," I said.
I drove around for a while, then circled back quietly.
As dusk fell, Selena walked out of the hospital, slipped down a side street, and climbed into that Maybach again.
This time, I saw with my own eyes as the Maybach rolled straight into the same luxury estate as before.
It didn't come out again until deep into the night.
Now I was absolutely certain that Vincent was definitely getting cheated on.
I couldn't help myself. I ended up back at the hospital and walked right into his room.
That guy was out cold, snoring away.
I set my bag down, sat on the edge of the bed, and let my hands wander all over him.
The more I touched him, the warmer his body seemed to get.
And sure enough, a certain part of him sprang to attention, responding right on cue.
I breathed a sigh of relief, but if anything, my doubts only grew.
Just as I was about to pull my hand away and get up, Vincent's hand shot out and grabbed my wrist.
