Chapter 6
"Don't be upset. I'll make sure Devin and his brothers apologize to you, and I'll help them see what Tiffany is really like," Kelvin said.
Before I could say anything, Kelvin's gentle voice filled the room.
"Violet, I know Devin and his brothers went too far, but you can't just say you have someone in your heart just to spite them," he said.
I paused for a moment, then shook my head gently. "Kelvin, I'm not just saying that to spite them. I really do have someone I like."
As I finished talking, I turned and caught sight of my crossbody bag sitting on the nightstand.
With some effort, I grabbed my bag, pulled out a bank card, and handed it to Phoebe.
"Phoebe, I've made quite a bit of money these past few years. This is for you, to pay you back for everything you spent on me while I was living with you guys," I said.
"And I really do have someone in my heart. It's not Devin or any of his brothers. I'm really not messing around," I added.
Kelvin paused for a moment, then couldn't help but ask, "So, Violet, who is the man in your heart?"
"Kelvin, I'll tell you when the time comes," I said with a smile.
As I answered, I couldn't help but picture that tall, confident guy in my mind.
Kelvin and Phoebe exchanged a look, and Kelvin sighed, "Guess Devin and his brothers just aren't lucky enough to be with you."
Phoebe gently pressed the card back into my hand. "Violet, we really do think of you as our own daughter. Just keep the money, okay? You never know when you might need it."
I grinned and pushed it right back to her, trying to reassure her. "Kelvin, Phoebe, please just take it. Seriously, you don't have to worry about me. I still have the inheritance my parents left me, so I'm not short on cash.
"After all these years with the Frost family, you two are already like my real parents. Please don't treat me like an outsider. When I get married someday, I'll be counting on you to help me plan the whole thing."
Kelvin and Phoebe exchanged a helpless glance and finally accepted the card from me.
For the next two days, I stayed in the hospital, but Devin and his brothers didn't bother to visit me even once.
Kelvin and Phoebe heard from the Frost family's staff that the three boys had been busy fawning over Tiffany, which made them furious. They threatened to haul the boys over to look after me.
"Violet, we're heading back right now to drag the boys over to take care of you. Seriously, you're their sister, but they didn't visit once! What kind of brothers are those?" Kelvin said, clearly frustrated.
"Kelvin, Phoebe, honestly, just having you two here is all I need," I said quickly, trying to stop them.
They just sighed and gave up on the idea.
When I finally got home after leaving the hospital, I got a message from Max Frost.
Max: [Violet, your birthday's coming soon. I designed a dress just for you as a birthday gift. It should have arrived at your place by now, so don't forget to check for it.]
Max was the Frost family's adopted son. He'd always been frail growing up, and right then, he was getting treatment in Clestaburg.
This time, he was the one I was going to marry.
When I saw his message, his aloof face flashed through my mind, and I felt my ears heat up.
Snapping out of my thoughts, I quickly sent Max a message.
I typed, [Max, how's your recovery going? Do you think you'll be able to make it to my birthday party?]
The butler didn't waste any time. When Tiffany came back, she realized she was locked out of the Frost family's house.
When Devin and his brothers found out, they stormed into my room, slamming the door open, faces full of rage.
"Violet, are you seriously this petty? It was just a burn. Is it really that big of a deal?" Devin snapped.
"Tiffany got thrown out of the house because of you. Are you happy now?" Eric added, his voice full of anger.
"Violet, that wasn't even on them! Why'd you have to go and do that?" Jacob said, sounding frustrated.
I shot them a cold glare. "Get out!"
Eric's scowl deepened at that.
"Violet, you need to go apologize to Tiffany right now!" he snapped.
"Me? Apologize?" I snapped, disbelief all over my face.
Why should I apologize?
I got burned, and these three still expected me to apologize? Were they for real?
Devin glared at me, looking seriously annoyed. "Yeah, you're coming with us right now to apologize to Tiffany!"
My hands balled into fists, and I couldn't hold back my anger anymore. "Enough! Will you ever stop? It wasn't even my fault! Why should I apologize?"
