Chapter 5

Grant was served at work two days later.

My lawyer called first. "It's done."

Three minutes later, Grant called.

"You had me served at my office?"

"That's where you were."

"People saw it."

"So now you believe me?"

Silence.

For days, he had treated the divorce like something I would calm down about. Now the papers were in his hands, and for the first time, he sounded unsure.

"You're serious."

I let the silence answer.

Then his voice changed.

"Fine. If you're leaving, things with Emma change too."

I sat up.

"I'm leaving you."

"You're leaving the marriage."

"Not Emma."
