Chapter 1
My husband Nathan Hughes had been acting weird lately. So while he was in the shower, I checked his phone.
Someone had posted: [After the girl you've been in love with for years marries someone else, how do you deal with it?]
Nathan's reply was at the top.
[I married her best friend. That way I could keep treating her well right out in the open—everyone just thought I was being nice to my wife's friend.]
The comments below were brutal.
Five minutes ago, he'd added: [Now she's gone. I'm torn. I don't know if I should join her.]
My blood ran cold.
When Nathan got out of the shower, there was a new reply waiting.
[Go be with her. You've loved her for 20 years—why stop now?]
I woke up at 3 a.m. to find Nathan writing a will.
He was leaving everything to my best friend's daughter—even our kids' college funds.

I'd always been a loner. Quiet. Not the type to wait around for anyone.
I went over a decade without a single real friend.
Then I met Lily Carter, my college roommate. She talked nonstop, heard only what she wanted to hear, and couldn't read a room to save her life.
But she wore me down. Eventually, we became the kind of best friends who told each other everything.
The day she got engaged, Lily introduced me to her childhood friend, Nathan.
"This is my best friend. He's genuine, never even had a girlfriend. Ambitious, family-oriented, and his parents both have rock-solid jobs. Marry him, and you've got yourself a loyal provider. No more fake smiles or networking—just chill and cash in."
I refused immediately. "He's way out of my league."
My family was a mess.
Watching my parents' marriage implode made me swear off the whole thing.
But Nathan fell hard for me and wouldn't take no for an answer.
After six months, I couldn't find a single red flag. He was kind, talented, and came from a solid family.
So I gave us a shot.
Once we started dating, Nathan was perfect—the kind of guy every woman dreamed about.
We got married soon after and had our son, Ryan Hughes.
Three years later, our daughter Bella Hughes was born.
Our life was like a fairytale.
Then a month ago, Lily died in a car crash.
Right after that, Ryan was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and needed surgery. Bella got hospitalized with pneumonia. Nathan came down with a bad cold.
I juggled three sick family members while grieving my only friend.
It was hell. But I survived.
Ryan's surgery went perfectly. Bella and Nathan recovered.
Just when I could finally breathe, Nathan started acting strange. Distant. Spaced out.
On impulse, I checked his phone while he was showering.
In his browsing history, I found an old post.
[After the girl you've been in love with for years marries someone else, how do you deal with it?]
Nathan's reply was at the top.
[I married her best friend. That way I could keep treating her well right out in the open—everyone just thought I was being nice to my wife's friend.]
My blood ran cold.
Every moment I'd deliberately ignored clicked into place.
Whenever Lily was around, Nathan would linger, saying he couldn't bear to leave me—but really, he just wanted more time with her.
He'd pump me for information about Lily, using me as a middleman to send her gifts.
Whenever I called or video-chatted with Lily, Nathan would hover nearby, trying to listen in.
All his efforts to please Lily weren't about understanding me or staying close to me—I was just his bridge to her.
I was nothing but a ladder he used to spy on Lily's happy life.
Everything I thought was love was a lie from the start.
I was never his lover—just a tool.
