Chapter 3
One day, I went to the hospital for a check-up. After confirming the baby was healthy, I was in such a good mood that I grabbed some dessert and headed straight to Victor's office.
It was lunchtime, and hardly anyone was around in the office. I walked all the way to Victor's office at the back, and just as I was about to knock, I heard voices inside.
"Bridget's been looking nauseous a lot lately. Is she pregnant or something? You did give her the pills I asked for, right?" someone said inside.
It was Victor's voice.
Pills? What pills?
My whole body tensed up. I could just feel Victor was keeping something from me.
"Relax, Mr. Wade. I ordered the birth control pills from overseas and mixed them right into Mrs. Wade's vitamins. She won't suspect a thing," the other person said.
The voice was familiar too.
It was Ben Almond, Victor's assistant.
It felt like my whole world just exploded. I slapped a hand over my mouth, trying not to fall apart.
Did Victor really swap my vitamins for birth control pills?
Why? Why would he do this?
He was always talking about how much he wanted a baby. He said he dreamed of having a little girl and that he'd spoil us both to the moon and back.
My head was spinning, and my hand holding the ultrasound report was shaking so hard that I could barely keep it together.
Victor just grunted in response. "Good. I don't want her pregnant. It would complicate things."
"Oh, and Brie's birthday is coming up. Tomorrow, fly to Ithara and pick up that Starry Sky necklace I ordered for her," he added.
Brie?
Did he mean Sabrina?
I could hear my own heart pounding in my chest.
Ben said, "Got it, Mr. Wade. Also, your first anniversary with Mrs. Wade. Should I arrange a dinner reservation or a gift?"
Victor was silent for a moment, like he was thinking it over.
Then he said, "Tomorrow? No, I'm not available. I'm meeting Brie. Just tell Bridget I have to work late, same as always. She'll buy it."
His voice was cold and distant, nothing like the man I thought I knew.
Ben blurted out, "Mr. Wade, what's the point? Ms. Reed's already married to Mr. Grant."
Victor just laughed under his breath. "One day, I'll be the one standing where Lucas is."
Hearing those words felt like a knife twisting in my chest. I could barely breathe, and a dull ache started in my stomach.
I pressed a shaky hand to my abdomen, cold sweat soaking through my clothes.
At that moment, I realized I was nothing but a cosmic joke.
Turns out, Victor only got close to me and stayed with me, all because of Sabrina.
He was afraid I'd try to win Lucas back and mess up Sabrina's relationship with him, so he "sacrificed" himself by marrying me.
But Victor never would've guessed that since I was actively trying to get pregnant, I had stopped taking the vitamins he gave me and switched to the ones prescribed by the hospital. That's how I ended up pregnant.
My heart was filled with bitterness.
"My baby, your dad never even looked forward to you coming into this world," I told my unborn baby.
I heard Ben finish speaking and walk toward the door. I gritted my teeth, put the report into my bag, and opened the door just as he reached it.
He jumped, startled.
"Mrs. Wade, why are you here? You look so pale," he said.
I forced a smile. "I brought some dessert, but my stomach started hurting right outside the door."
Victor heard me and hurried over, taking the dessert from my hand, full of concern. "Are you alright? If you're not feeling well, you should be resting at home. You didn't have to bring me anything. You'll make me worry."
I looked down, hiding the complicated feelings in my eyes.
Seriously, with acting skills that good, he should be starring in dramas.
