Chapter 2
The wedding was extravagant. I wore the custom-made gown I'd picked out a year ago, while the makeup artist carefully covered the traces of last night's tears.
As she worked, my mind wandered, sketching out dreams of the future Lucas and I would build together.
So when I stood on that altar, white roses everywhere, holding Lucas' hand, I never imagined he'd lean into the mic and declare, icy as ever, "I don't."
I stared at him in shock, and he just gave me a mocking smile, like he was enjoying my humiliation.
"It's always been Sabrina. She's the only one I love, the only one I want to marry. We missed our chance when she went abroad, but now I know she's the one I want, and I'm going to marry her," Lucas announced coldly.
With that, Lucas grabbed my hand and practically ripped the diamond ring off my finger.
He was so rough that it left angry red marks on my skin.
But he didn't care. He stormed off the altar, dropped to one knee, and slipped the ring onto Sabrina's finger.
Sabrina lifted her chin and looked up at me, her eyes practically screaming triumph, like she was saying, "See? I told you Lucas and the ring would be mine."
The whole wedding had become a joke. The guests were gone, and all that remained were shattered rose petals littering the floor.
I crouched at the edge of the altar, hiding my face as I sobbed uncontrollably.
"Here, clean yourself up," a voice said.
Someone handed me a clean handkerchief. Without thinking, I grabbed it, wiped my nose, then looked up to see who it was.
He looked familiar, but I couldn't place him.
He flashed me a small smile. "I'm Victor Wade. We met at the party last night."
I stared at his face, totally blank for a few seconds, then it hit me. Oh, god, it was the hot guy I'd randomly picked to play the game with me at the party.
Embarrassment crashed over me, and I stammered out an apology. "Sorry about last night. I'll wash the handkerchief and give it back to you."
I glanced down at the handkerchief, now smeared with tears and snot, and hesitated. "Are you sure you still want it back?"
Victor chuckled, "Keep it. But you owe me dinner now."
Turns out, Victor and I went to the same college.
But back then, my eyes were only on Lucas. I never even noticed Victor.
Two months went by in a flash.
Lucas had already announced to everyone that he and Sabrina were getting engaged.
On my birthday, Victor brought me to the observatory to watch a meteor shower.
Streaks of meteors flashed across the sky, and his eyes shone like starlight.
"Bridget, I knew you only had eyes for Lucas, so I kept my feelings to myself and just wished you happiness. But now that he's let you go, I'm going to try to win your heart."
"Marry me. Be my wife. Let me take care of you from now on," he added, his voice gentle and sincere.
Looking at his gentle profile, I said yes before I even thought about it.
When Lucas found out I was marrying Victor, he totally freaked out and called me.
"You're going to regret this," he spat.
I snorted, my voice icy. "No, I won't."
After marrying Victor, I went from the laughingstock Lucas had dumped at the altar to the wife of Wade Enterprises' CEO. Our relationship only grew stronger, filled with genuine happiness.
The day I found out I was pregnant, I was over the moon.
Victor and I were both eagerly anticipating the arrival of our little one.
I wanted to surprise him, so I decided to wait until our wedding anniversary to tell him the news.
