Chapter 6

Three days after Nathan moved in, something happened.

It was the middle of the night. A scream woke me up. It came from the second floor.

I grabbed the knife and ran out of the cupboard. Emily was standing at the top of the stairs in her pajamas, shaking.

"What happened?" I asked.

When she saw me, she screamed like she'd seen a ghost. She stumbled backward. Her foot missed the step. She fell.

I reached out to grab her but missed. She hit the ground hard. Blood appeared on her forehead.
