The steady beeping of the monitors echoed in my ears.

Sometimes it drifted close, sometimes it faded far, but it never stopped—like it would go on forever.

I felt dead, and yet somehow, I was still alive.

When I finally came to, all I could see was the stark white ceiling above me, the hospital room so quiet it felt like the world had stopped.
