Chapter 1
Olivia Hawthorne's dead husband came back to life. He was pretending to be his twin brother and taking care of his brother's widow.
The day she learned the truth, Olivia went to confront him while pregnant. He wasn't there—he had taken his Sister-in-law to a prenatal checkup. She rushed to the hospital and saw Lucas Black holding Charlotte Clark's ultrasound image, tracing the baby's features with her, his expression impossibly tender.
When he saw her, his face changed. He quickly pulled her into a corner. "Vincent pushed me out of the way and died. His last wish was for me to take care of Charlotte—he said he owed her a hundred wishes, and I have to repay them for him. "Olivia, I have no choice. You understand, don't you?"
Later, to make it up to her, he sneaked into her room that night, cornered her, and kissed her until her legs gave way.
Necklaces, perfume, handbags—countless luxury brands were sent to Olivia. He said to wait a little longer. Once Charlotte had the baby, they could be together again. Olivia gave in.
Less than a month later, Olivia doubled over with abdominal pain.
She leaned against a wall to flag down a car and saw Lucas accompanying Charlotte at a baby store next door. They were gazing happily at a baby outfit, and Lucas even kissed Charlotte's forehead.
At that moment, Olivia's mind went blank. Her heart nearly shattered.
That night she texted Lucas, trembling:" Have you really fallen for Charlotte?"
Just that sentence made Lucas drive through the rain all night to come back. He pressed her into bed and made love to her all night.
"Olivia, it's all fake. Just bear it a little longer—only three wishes left."
But Charlotte called, and he left.
After that, Lucas sent her piles of letters, stacked a meter high—every page filled with his longing for her.
Olivia believed him again.
Then the last wish arrived: the wedding invitation for Lucas and Charlotte.
"Olivia, Vincent always regretted not giving Charlotte a grand wedding. I owe him that! After the wedding, Charlotte's due date will pass, and we can go back to how we were."
The hot invitation burned her hands. Their names were linked in red, searing her heart.
What did he think she was? She endured pregnancy alone while he ran to Charlotte every time, making excuse after excuse. If the baby was born, could they really go back?
On the wedding day, Olivia was dragged to the venue by her mother in law. She watched the couple exchange vows, rings, and a kiss on stage.
She witnessed their happiness.
As tears wet her lashes, Charlotte handed her a cup of tea." Olivia, here's to you, from your brother in law and me. It hasn't been easy for you since Lucas died."
Olivia looked at Lucas, but he avoided her eyes."Your sister-in-law is toasting you. The least you can do is drink."
That broke what was left of her heart. She downed the whole cup and turned to leave.
Then a shout: "Watch out!" She looked up and saw the chandelier falling.
But Lucas's first instinct was to push her aside and shield Charlotte.
Her mind went blank. When she came to, the chandelier had crushed her to the floor. Pain shot through her leg, nearly making her faint.
"Lucas, help me—and our…" she called out.
He instinctively turned around.
But before he could reach her, Charlotte was suddenly knocked to the ground, clutching her belly and crying out in pain.
"Honey, my stomach hurts!"
That one sentence turned Lucas away. He never looked back.
Olivia's heart went numb. She had seen him abandon her countless times, yet it still hurt.
Luckily, a stranger took her to the hospital.
Half-conscious, she heard Lucas's voice from across the hall:" My wife is in serious condition! Call every doctor in the hospital! Move!"
His wife.
Olivia laughed through her tears.
So Charlotte was his wife. Then what was she? Just his sister-in-law?
A nurse exclaimed, "She's hemorrhaging! She needs treatment now! The woman across the hall only has a scratch—get those doctors over here!" But the reply came: "That man said no doctor leaves until his wife wakes up, or else."
Olivia heard no more. The last thing she remembered was Lucas choosing Charlotte over her again.
When she woke, Lucas was looking at her with complicated eyes. "Olivia, it was an emergency. Charlotte is pregnant. I had to put you second. Tell me what you want—I'll buy it for you."
She smiled faintly and said nothing.
What was the use of explanations after what he had done?
He tried to say more, but Charlotte called, and he rushed off.
After he left, Olivia touched her flat belly and coughed.
Then she couldn't breathe.
That child had probably never been meant to come. Now it was gone.
A nurse handed her the miscarriage report. From the room across the hall came laughter.
Through the crack in the door, Olivia saw Lucas resting his head on Charlotte's pregnant belly.
"Honey, the baby is so restless. Too bad Vincent left so young—he never even had a child with Olivia."
But he had. Lucas had killed his own child.
"Don't say that. You have me…"
Olivia didn't listen anymore. She turned and called a number from her blacklist. "I lost the bet. Take me away."
"You were so stubborn when you married him. Regretting it already?"
A cold snort. Then, after a long silence, "Fine. Cut all ties with the Blacks. In ten days, I'll stage a deliberate accident. I’ll return home with your death cancellation certificate and take you away."
