Chapter 3
After breakfast, Julian was about to head to the office.
Margaret, still not giving up, started stirring things up again while Julian was changing his shoes.
"Oh, Julian, you see, Liv's been out of college for ages, just lounging around at home isn't doing her any good. As her big brother, why don't you get her a job at the company? Even a VP spot, let her get some experience."
I almost spat out the truffle oatmeal I'd swallowed.
Vice president?
Man, she's got nerve!
The vice presidents at Sinclair Holdings were either old-timers who'd fought alongside Charlotte for decades, or top Ivy League grads.
Me, an art major from some third-rate college, being a VP?
Would I be the company mascot or the resident shit-stirrer?
Julian paused while tying his shoes.
He straightened up, adjusted his cuffs, gave Margaret a cold look, then his gaze settled on me.
There was a hint of amusement in his eyes, like he was waiting to see how I'd react.
In my previous life, when I heard that, I sat up straight, eyes full of hope as I looked at Julian, thinking I totally deserved it.
But Julian shot back coldly, "The company doesn't keep dead weight," slammed the door in my face, and left me stewing.
This time, before Julian could even open his mouth, I started waving my hands in panic and shook my head like a bobblehead.
"No, no, no! Margaret, don't throw me under the bus!"
I shot her a look like, "Are you trying to get me murdered?
"Is that place even for normal people? It's a war zone! With a brain like mine, I'd be dead meat in there. And what if I mess up a signature or put a decimal in the wrong spot and end up bankrupting Sinclair Holdings?"
I dashed over to Julian, pressed my palms together like I was praying, and gave him my most sincere look. "Julian, please, don't listen to Margaret! If you hand the company to me, it'll be a total train wreck; with you in charge, everything stays safe.
"For world peace and our family's fortune, you should keep that VP seat. If I sit there, it'd be like sitting on hot coals."
Julian blinked, caught off guard.
Guess he'd never heard such a refreshingly weird excuse for dodging a job offer in his life.
Even Charlotte, standing at the stairs, couldn't help but burst out laughing.
"Liv's got a point," Charlotte said as she came down the stairs, holding a black card. "With her personality, she's not cut out for the corporate battlefield."
She walked over and pressed the card into my hand.
"This is my supplementary card; no limit. Buy whatever you want, and don't let Margaret's bitter comments get to you. The Sinclairs have got you covered."
I stared at the heavy black card in my hand, my eyes instantly turning into dollar signs.
This was the legendary Unlimited Black Card!
In my previous life, I turned down the card for the sake of so-called "dignity" and "power," and insisted on starting from the bottom at the company, only to get iced out by coworkers, screwed over by my boss, and end up with nothing.
"Thanks, Mom! Mom, you really are my mom!"
I was so hyped I hugged Charlotte's leg; even though her evening gown made it kinda tricky, I still gave her a quick squeeze. I changed my tune so fast, it was like I'd been calling her Mom forever.
Before this, I'd never called her Mom, only "Aunt." I used to think that calling her Mom would be like betraying my real mother.
Now, I finally got it.
Whoever bankrolls me was my real mom.
Charlotte was clearly caught off guard by my sudden "Mom," but her smile only got bigger.
"Alright, go have some fun," she said.
Julian watched the whole scene, pushed up his glasses, a knowing smirk playing at his lips, then turned and headed out the door.
Margaret stood there, staring at the black card in my hand, her eyes practically popping out of her head, jealousy written all over her face.
"Olivia! You... you're just shamelessly embracing decadence!"
I gave the card a quick kiss and flashed her a dazzling smile. "Margaret, this kind of decadence? Most people would beg for it! Don't worry about me; hurry home and get ready to babysit your grandkids... Oh, wait, your daughter's still single, isn't she?"
Margaret was so mad she nearly passed out.
