Chapter 1

I hadn't meant to find it. All I wanted was to check our joint savings account balance—something I'd done countless times before without a second thought. Sean's laptop sat open on the kitchen counter, still warm from his morning coffee ritual, the screen glowing with familiar banking tabs.

But as I clicked through to our account, my finger slipped. Instead of the banking site, I found myself staring at a forum page titled "Relationship Confessions." My heart stuttered as I recognized Sean's username—the same one he'd used for everything since college.

I should have closed it. Should have respected his privacy. But the post title made my blood freeze: "Living with someone I settled for while dreaming of my soulmate."

My hands trembled as I scrolled down, each word hitting me like a physical blow.

*"Five years married to someone who's... fine. Safe. She cooks, cleans, supports my dreams financially. But God, she's not HER. Every night I lie next to my wife and think about what could have been. My real soulmate—the one who got away. The passion, the connection, the way she understood me without words. I dream about her laugh, her touch, the way she made me feel alive. My wife is just... there. A placeholder. Sometimes I wonder if she knows she was never my first choice."*

The room spun around me. I gripped the counter, my knuckles white against the granite surface Sean had insisted we upgrade last year—with money I'd saved from skipping lunches and buying generic groceries.

There were dozens of comments, other users sharing their own stories of settling, of staying with "good enough" while pining for something better. But it was Sean's responses that shattered what remained of my world:

*"Update: She's back in town. My soulmate. We've been talking. God, just hearing her voice again... I remember what real love feels like. My wife has no idea. She's so trusting, so naive. She thinks our marriage is solid because I stopped complaining about her cooking."*

*"Another update: Saw her today. We grabbed coffee. The chemistry is still there, stronger than ever. She's single now. She asked why I married someone else. How do I explain that I was young and scared? That I chose security over passion? My wife was there, available, willing to give me everything. But she was never THE one."*

My vision blurred. Five years. Five years of believing in us, of sacrificing my own dreams to build his. Five years of cooking his favorite meals, of saving every penny to support his startup, of being his cheerleader when clients rejected his proposals and his accountant when bills piled up.

I was never his wife. I was his employee. His convenient arrangement.

With shaking hands, I opened our banking website in a new tab. The familiar interface loaded, showing our joint savings—the account I'd built with careful deposits from my part-time jobs while he pursued his business dreams. But as I scrolled through recent transactions, ice formed in my chest.

Transfers. Large ones. Amounts that made my salary look pitiful, all going to an account I didn't recognize. The dates corresponded perfectly with Sean's forum updates about reconnecting with his "soulmate."

I grabbed a notepad and started writing down transaction details, my hands steadier now that I had a purpose. Fifteen thousand in March. Twenty thousand in April. Another thirty thousand just last week—the same week Sean had told me we needed to "tighten our belts" and suggested I take on more freelance work.

The money trail led to a property management company. My fingers flew across the keyboard, cross-referencing addresses and names until I found it: a house. A beautiful two-bedroom craftsman in the hills, purchased three months ago under the name Sloane Martinez.

Sloane. My friend Sloane. The woman who'd comforted me through my parents' coldness, who'd celebrated my wedding, who'd shared countless dinners at our table while I cooked and she praised my "lucky husband."

The same Sloane who was Sean's ex-girlfriend. His "soulmate." The woman he'd bought a love nest for with money I'd saved by eating ramen for lunch and mending my clothes instead of buying new ones.

I sat in the kitchen that had become my prison, surrounded by the life I'd built on lies. The afternoon sun streamed through windows I'd cleaned religiously, illuminating the fresh flowers I'd bought to brighten Sean's mood after a difficult client meeting.

Everything was a performance. My marriage, my purpose, my worth—all of it built on the foundation of being someone's consolation prize.

But as I stared at the evidence spread before me, something shifted inside my chest. The crushing weight of betrayal began to transform into something sharper, more focused.

They thought I was naive. Trusting. Safe.

They had no idea what they'd just unleashed.
