Alexander knelt before my parents in solemn respect.

Blood still marked his brow, but he did not wipe it away. "I have failed you both," he said, voice thick. "This is my shame to bear."

He looked up, resolve hardening his gaze. "The position of a second wife is only temporary. Once I have secured true standing, I will wed Amelia properly, openly, and with the honor she deserves."

My father helped him to his feet. "Alexander, we don't blame you. When power is involved, no one really has a choice. Just treat Amelia well. That's all we ask."
