Chapter 2
Upon arriving at the company, I summoned Harry to my office.
"Harry, contact a private investigation firm for me. I want to investigate someone," I ordered.
"Mr. Jenson, who do you want to investigate?" Harry asked, visibly surprised.
"My wife," I stated bluntly.
Harry froze for a moment. Then, realization dawned on him, and he nodded in understanding.
"Understood, Mr. Jenson. I'll get right at it," he replied.
An hour later, Harry knocked on my door and entered.
"Mr. Jenson, I've contacted a private investigation firm. Here's their information packet," he said.
I took the folder from Harry and glanced inside. It was a profile of Major Investigations, a professional private investigation firm.
I ordered, "Have their person-in-charge come see me immediately."
"Yes, Mr. Jenson," Harry responded.
At 3 p.m., a middle-aged man arrived at my office.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Jenson. I'm Wayne Zuniga, the manager of Major Investigations," he introduced himself.
"Mr. Zuniga, I want your team to investigate my wife, Rebecca Letterson. I need a full report on her every move over the past three months, including her relationship with a personal trainer named Tobias Solorio," I said.
"Understood, Mr. Jenson. What level of evidence do you need?" Wayne was very professional.
"The more detailed the better, preferably with video evidence," I said.
"No problem, Mr. Jenson. I'll have the results for you within a week," Wayne replied.
"No. I want it done in three days, and I'll pay you double your usual rate."
Wayne's eyes lit up. "You can count on me, Mr. Jenson. I'll deliver satisfactory results within three days."
After sending Wayne off, I slumped back in my chair and lit a cigarette.
Since Rebecca chose to betray me, she'd only have herself to blame for what came next.
In the early evening, I left my office ahead of schedule and headed home.
The house was empty. Rebecca was still at the gym.
I powered up her laptop and entered her password.
Rebecca's password was her birthday, and she never changed it.
As her computer was filled with countless photos, I scrolled through them one by one, examining each image carefully.
Mid-scroll, my hand froze.
In one photo, Rebecca and Tobias sat very close to each other in a café, and his hand was on top of hers.
That photo was dated two months ago.
I kept scrolling, finding more photos just like that.
They had been to movie theaters, restaurants, and parks. In every photo, they looked like a couple madly in love.
All this while, I'd been kept in the dark.
"Ben, I'm home!" Rebecca's voice rang out from outside the door.
I quickly shut down her laptop and hurried back to the living room, trying to act as if nothing had happened.
"How was your workout today?" I asked with a smile.
Rebecca, her face still flushed from her workout, said, "It was great! Tobias says I'm in perfect shape for pregnancy workouts."
I asked, "Oh, really? So, what's this Mr. Solorio like?"
"He's very professional and responsible," Rebecca replied, though her gaze flickered nervously.
"I think I'll drop by the gym one of these days to check it out, and meet this Mr. Solorio while I'm at it," I said.
"Oh?" Rebecca's composure faltered. "There's really no need. You're always so busy with work..."
"Even the busiest man should care about his wife's health," I said, locking eyes with her.
Rebecca lowered her head, unable to meet my gaze.
She hesitated, then stammered, "O-Okay, then. I'll take you there some other time."
For the next two days, I played the oblivious husband, keeping to my usual work routine while treating Rebecca with the same meticulous care as always.
But I quietly began orchestrating my moves.
First, I instructed the finance department to compile a financial report on Rebecca's company. As her angel investor, I had the right to access this information.
The results completely caught me off guard.
Rebecca's advertising agency might appear to be doing well on the surface, but in reality, it was cash-strapped. Payments from several major clients remained outstanding, and without external funding, the company would collapse within two months at most.
She never breathed a word of this to me.
"Mr. Jenson, one more thing," Harry reported. "Ms. Letterson has been having frequent meetings with Mr. Stuart from Starry Investments. They're reportedly in funding talks."
Devon Stuart was the founder of Starry Investments and my business rival.
This revelation confirmed my suspicions. Rebecca's involvement was more than just an affair. She might have ulterior motives.
On the evening of the third day, Wayne arrived right on schedule.
"Mr. Jenson, the investigation results are ready," he said, handing me an envelope. "Inside you'll find the detailed report and video evidence."
I opened the envelope to find a hefty stack of photos and several DVDs inside.
The very first photo made me clench my fists.
The photo showed Rebecca and Tobias locked in an embrace outside a hotel, timestamped last month.
"They've been having an affair for three months now—meeting at least three times a week, usually at hotels," Wayne reported.
I flipped through the photos, each one pricking my heart.
Wayne handed over a DVD. "This is video footage of them in the hotel room," he said. "The recording is crystal clear."
I didn't watch the DVD right away—I was afraid I might lose control of my emotions.
"Anything else I should know?" I asked, my voice tight with controlled anger.
Wayne continued, "Tobias owes about 160 thousand dollars to loan sharks, and recently, they've been pressing him hard for repayment. Moreover, we've discovered that Ms. Letterson has been in talks with Starry Investments—she apparently wants to sell her company's shares."
And with that piece of news, everything instantly clicked.
Rebecca had been cheating on me with Tobias and was now carrying his child. Now she was scheming to cash out her shares, divorce me, and run off with Tobias with the money.
And to her, I was a walking ATM.
"Thank you, Mr. Zuniga. I appreciate your efforts," I said through gritted teeth.
"Mr. Jenson, is there anything else you need us to do?" Wayne asked.
"Not for now. I'll contact you if needed," I replied.
