Lucas didn't say a word.

He grabbed a towel from the couch and, not bothering to be gentle, wiped the water off my face.

"Janet, if you didn't look so pathetic right now, maybe your words would actually have some weight," he said.

He released my wrist and gave me a shove toward the door.

"Get out," he snapped. "Take your time and figure out exactly how you're going to beg for my forgiveness."

The door slammed shut in my face.

I stood outside in the freezing wind for ages, my mind totally blank.
