They didn't even bother changing out of their pajamas, just hurried nervously toward the small room.

Mom twisted the doorknob and pushed the door open.

On the screen, I couldn't see inside the room, but I could make out their backs as they stood in the doorway.

The place was probably packed with empty cardboard boxes I'd left behind, stacked up to the ceiling. The boxes looked untouched, heavy and solid, giving off a comforting illusion of safety.
