Chapter 2
Lyra Castillo decided not to wait for Ryker Tran to come home. Swiftly packing her belongings, she resolved to leave the past behind. His excuses had lost all meaning for her. After all, while she was away, he had brought another woman into their home, into her bed. The stranger wore Lyra's cherished Victorian-style dresses and teased Ryker by asking who wore them better. To charm her, Ryker was quick to compliment her. Together, they basked in their newfound infatuation.
The dress, a piece Lyra held dear, had turned into a weapon used against her. She had met Ryker after starting her career in the Shadow Fang Pack, and he never grasped the significance of that dress to her. With his privileged background as the future Beta of his pack, Ryker was set to take over the family business. After graduating, Lyra joined the company. When their relationship flourished, she naively chose to resign to prevent any rumors of workplace romance from tarnishing her career, and to avoid any disapproval from his parents, Khari and Harmony Tran.
Ryker seemed pleased with her sacrifice at the time. As she opened the door to leave, he returned and saw her standing with her suitcase. Softly, he asked, "What's this really about?" Without a word, she placed a photo from the nightstand and an Instagram post before him. He looked as if he had taken a hard blow, standing there speechless.
When Lyra departed, Ryker stood there with his head bowed. She wondered if the sound of her suitcase rolling away reminded him of the promises he had made. He persistently tried to reach out, using new phone numbers and sending messages through WhatsApp to win her back.
"I'm sorry. What do you want? A purse or jewelry? This is just a minor issue; let's not blow it out of proportion," he wrote.
"You're a designer. Our family's contacts in this industry could be valuable to you. Leaving me won't bring you any gain," he added.
His apologies felt insincere, offering what he believed were incentives to sway her emotions. He even enlisted his parents, Khari and Harmony Tran, to call her, asking if they were experiencing a rough patch.
She chose to reveal little, preserving a semblance of dignity for both herself and him. The mistake was his, and it wasn't her responsibility to explain it to others. My wolf growled in the back of my mind, a low rumble of anger and betrayal. I shushed her, focusing on the task at hand.
As I walked away from the Shadow Fang Pack territory, I couldn't help but feel a sense of relief mixed with apprehension. I was leaving behind not just a relationship, but a pack that had been my home for years. But I knew I couldn't stay, not after what Ryker had done. The mate bond we had once shared felt like a distant memory, tainted by his infidelity.
I made my way to the Blue Moon Pack, where I had been offered a position as an innovator. It was a fresh start, a chance to rebuild my life and career without the shadow of Ryker's betrayal hanging over me. As I crossed the border into Blue Moon territory, I felt a strange sense of belonging, as if the Moon Goddess herself was guiding me to this new chapter in my life.
Little did I know, this decision would lead me down a path filled with new challenges, new relationships, and a chance to rediscover who I truly was, both as a werewolf and as Lyra Castillo.
