Chapter 4
My parents, who were on a business trip, got wind of the situation and asked me what I was planning to do.
I told them there was no way I was going to marry Pierce Martin. As for the Wagner family, I needed some time to think it over. After all, I had agreed too quickly under the urgent circumstances.
I decided to give Elian Wagner a call.
"Elian, thank you for what you did last time, but your gift is way too generous. Let's schedule a lunch; I'll treat you and return it," I said calmly. To my surprise, he laughed.
"Kalani, I thought I made myself clear, but it looks like you're still not getting it," he replied. "We're already engaged, remember? The whole city saw it live. There's no backing out now. We can have lunch, sure, but it'll be on me. Before the wedding, we still need to meet each other's parents," he added.
I glanced at the bracelet on my wrist and thought it over for a moment before agreeing.
The meeting with his parents went smoothly; the Wagners seemed quite pleased with my background. It was hard not to recall my time with Pierce's family. His parents always acted superior, as if I should feel fortunate to marry into their family. Pierce's mother even subjected me to the humiliating task of serving coffee by hand as a test.
I had never experienced such indignity in my life, but for Pierce, I endured it. During the entire ordeal, he never once stood up for me.
Leaning against the door, I wrapped Elian’s jacket around myself, waiting for him to drive up. Unexpectedly, I found myself face-to-face with Pierce and Faith Grant.
