Chapter 5

Ryan called again.

I declined it.

Ten seconds later, my phone rang from his office number. I answered because the attorney had told me not to block necessary communication about Lucy.

“Where is my daughter?” Ryan demanded.

“She’s safe.”

“Where are you?”

I lowered the volume. Lucy shifted on the air mattress but did not wake.

“We’re staying somewhere safe tonight.”

“You can’t take our child and disappear.”

“I haven’t disappeared. My attorney’s information is on the table.”

His footsteps moved rapidly over the line. A door opened.

“What attorney?”

“The one handling our separation.”

“Bring Lucy home. We’ll discuss…
