The coffee in the paper cup had gone cold.

Ethan stood by the vending machines in the mountain hospital, staring blankly at the harsh fluorescent lights.

Rebecca touched his arm.

"Noah is finally asleep," she whispered, leaning into his shoulder. "You should come sit with us. You look exhausted."

For three years, her touch had made him feel important. It made him feel like a protector. A hero.

Tonight, with the memory of Sophie's pale, bleeding face burned into his mind, Rebecca's touch only made his skin crawl.
