Chapter 2
"Baby, you're awake?" Andre noticed the way I was frowning.
He gently brushed my hair aside with his fingers, his tone casual as always. "Do you still remember me?"
He was convinced I'd lost my memory again.
Now he could rewrite my identity and script our relationship however he wanted, all over again.
I forced down the disgust rising in my throat and looked at him.
"I do," I replied.
"What... what do you remember?" Andre stammered.
He froze for a moment and then clutched my hand in a panic.
He looked like he really cared about me.
I almost laughed at how ridiculous he looked, about to expose him.
But before I could say anything, the door to the hospital room was suddenly pushed open.
A lively, adorable girl hopped in. She said, "Andre, I watched the video of you pushing Angelina off the bungee platform and freaking her out so badly she lost the baby.
"Honestly, that was pretty entertaining, so I guess I'll let you off the hook this time."
Her bubbly voice filled the room.
It felt like the wild winds from the bungee jump were back, swirling around us.
My face went pale, and I instinctively pushed Andre away.
"Sienna," Andre said with a sigh, "she just woke up. Don't scare her."
"Are you actually worried about her?" Sienna's eyes grew teary.
"Alright, I only care about you," Andre hurried to comfort her, lowering his voice. "But she said she remembers me."
"She got her memory back?" Sienna blurted out.
She shot me a quick glance and shrugged off her earlier words with a casual, half-hearted explanation.
"I was just messing around. I'm your bestie, remember?" Sienna said.
Of course I remembered.
Andre and I had been legally married for two years.
But thanks to her, the actual wedding ceremony kept getting postponed over and over, until last week, when I woke up with amnesia.
Andre not only set a date for the wedding, but he also brought Sienna to me, claiming she was my best friend and wanted to be my maid of honor.
I felt an instinctive disgust and refused without hesitation.
Just because of that, they were ruthless enough to force me, a pregnant woman terrified of heights, to go bungee jumping, and without a shred of guilt, they took my baby and my ability to have children.
And now, they still wanted to keep pretending to be the people closest to me, trying to fool me all over again.
Hatred hit me like a tidal wave.
I dropped my eyes, trying to hide the fury burning inside.
My parents were both Doctors Without Borders.
They raised me to be kind, right down to my bones.
So at first, all I wanted was to call out Andre's fake act, divorce him, and let him stew in his guilt for the rest of his life.
But now, I had changed my mind.
That whole "regretful ex chasing after his lost love" drama? That was something straight out of a web novel.
Even if guys like him felt guilty, it never lasted.
They didn't care about my pain at all. If I slinked away without fighting back, then I had no one to blame but myself for everything I had suffered.
I shook my head.
I purposely put on a lost, clueless expression.
Andre let out a sigh of relief.
"So, what exactly do you remember?" he asked.
"I was just joking," I said, making it up as I went. "You seemed so familiar with me, so I was just trying to see what you'd say. So, who am I? And who are you to me?"
Andre automatically repeated the answer he'd used countless times before, "Your name is Angelina Morrison, and you're my..."
"Maid," Sienna taunted with a sly grin. "Andre's my boyfriend, and you? You're nothing but the Dillard family's maid."
"Sienna," Andre barked, his expression darkening.
But he held his tongue.
"Why are you getting all worked up? It's not like this is the first time we've done this. Does it matter what she thinks?" Sienna said, unfazed. "Whatever, if it really bothers you, next week you can be hers for all I care."
She didn't bother to lower her voice.
Andre instinctively turned to check my reaction.
I played dumb on purpose. "Wow, so the Dillard family treats their maids like royalty?
"You personally take care of me when I'm sick, and Sienna even calls me her bestie?"
Sienna was caught off guard.
Andre got a weird feeling about the whole thing.
Still, my memory always reset every week, without fail.
So even if I played along with Sienna's story, it wouldn't change anything.
"You saved my life, so—" Andre started.
"So, Mr. Dillard, what's my reward? How much are you planning to shell out for your so-called lifesaver?" I interrupted.
The room went dead silent again.
Andre stared at me, disappointment all over his face, like he never thought I'd turn out so money-minded now that I was pretending to be someone else.
I pretended not to notice.
"I lost my memory because I saved you. You're not seriously thinking that just taking care of me for a bit and slapping a 'bestie' label on me counts as paying me back, are you?" I shot back.
Sienna gritted her teeth. "How much do you want?"
I said with a half-smile, "What do you mean, 'how much do I want'? You make it sound like I'm not your lifesaver, but some scammer faking an accident to squeeze money out of you.
"As for how much you should pay, shouldn't that depend on how much Mr. Dillard thinks his life is worth?"
Sienna shot Andre a desperate look for help.
Andre's face was grim.
He was used to me always trying to please him, always depending on him.
Maybe he couldn't handle the way I was looking at him now, cold, businesslike, and totally unfamiliar, so he just laid it all out. "If you ask, I'll give you."
What was he trying to pull?
Was he seriously counting on someone with amnesia to get sentimental about the past?
I laughed out loud, pissed off and totally exposing him right then and there. "Then I want all your assets. Will you give them to me?"
"Yes," Andre answered without a moment's hesitation.
I was genuinely stunned for a second.
Sienna's eyes went wide. "Are you crazy? If you give her everything, then what about me?"
"I care about you, but her memory keeps resetting, and there's no cure. I always knew I'd have to look after her forever," Andre said to Sienna.
But Andre's gaze was soft and lingering as he looked at me.
"No matter what I give her, it's never too much," he said.
Then, right there in the hospital room, he told his assistant to bring in a lawyer, and they started drafting the asset transfer paperwork on the spot.
I watched as he signed his name.
I watched as the lawyer made it official, stamping the agreement right in front of us.
There was only one thought running through my mind.
What a scumbag.
When he called me his girlfriend, he didn't hesitate to hurt me without a second thought to please Sienna.
But when Sienna's the girlfriend, suddenly he was here playing the devoted lover, putting on this whole "take everything you want" show for me.
Was he planning to hand it all over this week and then snatch it back next week when my memory reset?
