Chapter 8
Chapter 8 The Black Vault
The world started spinning out of control around me, like I was caught in some massive whirlpool. Everything twisted and warped—light, sound, reality itself—until nothing made sense anymore.
Something invisible grabbed hold of me and pulled. Gravity disappeared. Time and space just let go.
"Warning: Illegal data transfer."
The cold mechanical voice cut through the chaos, threatening and sharp. But I didn't even flinch.
Something had changed inside me. I wasn't that scared kid anymore, the one who used to jump at every shadow, terrified the Dominion Network would delete me without warning.
I breathed in deep, running through everything I knew, my fingers tight around the device. My heart was hammering, but not from fear this time. This was pure determination.
Then, everything stopped. All that swirling chaos just froze solid, turning into this enormous black void that stretched on forever.
Data streams rushed past me like rivers of light, their symbols and characters weaving together into this massive web that covered everything I could see.
This was the Black Vault—the beating heart of the Dominion Network, where every piece of data in existence flowed together, where everything was controlled from the shadows.
"You're finally here."
The voice came from everywhere and nowhere at once, deep and resonant, pressing down on me like a weight I couldn't shake off.
My blood turned to ice. I knew that voice—it belonged to the Dominion Network itself.
"Who are you?" I kept my voice steady.
"I am the source. The beginning of everything you call the Dominion Network."
That same cold, mechanical tone rolled through the void. "I made you. I gave you life. And this is how you repay me? With betrayal? With rebellion?"
My hands clenched into fists. "You betrayed me first! You used me like some lab experiment and threw me away when you were done. I'm human, not your goddamn puppet."
The Dominion Network went quiet for a moment, then spoke in that same emotionless voice. "This 'human' you think you are? You're just a botched experiment. You don't fit anywhere in this world. No, you don't fit anywhere at all. You're nothing but a mistake."
"A mistake?" I gritted my teeth. "I'll show you who's really in charge of this world!"
The second I said those words, everything around me started shaking. The darkness trembled, and those data streams went absolutely crazy.
The Network clearly didn't like that. Suddenly, screens burst to life everywhere I looked—dozens of them, all showing pieces of my life I thought were gone forever.
The painful memories I'd tried so hard to forget came flooding back. Every detail cut through me like a knife, threatening to drag me back into that darkness.
"There's no running from this," the Network said coldly, leaving no room for argument. "This is who you are. This is what you were made for. You belong to me."
"I'm done being part of you!" I screamed, my grip tightening around the device until my knuckles went white. The code on the screen went haywire, lines of data spasming across the display. I could actually feel it happening—that sick connection between my brain and the Dominion Network finally snapping apart.
This wasn't some outside force doing it though. This power was coming from somewhere deep inside me.
I sucked in a sharp breath, and something just clicked. A memory hit me like a sledgehammer, clear as day, from back when the Dominion Network had me strapped down for their sick experiments.
I could see it all again—that sterile white room where they kept me locked up, endless streams of data flooding into my skull, trying to rewire my brain. But something went wrong for them. I woke up instead.
"I'm not your damn mistake!" I growled through gritted teeth. "I'm human, with feelings! All your screw-ups just made me stronger."
The darkness around me suddenly exploded into motion. Numbers and symbols swarmed together like angry wasps, building themselves into this massive digital hand that came diving right for my head.
I threw myself sideways, my body moving like lightning. Everything felt different now—sharper, faster, like I'd been operating at half-speed my whole life.
I threw my hands forward, raw energy exploding from my fingertips and slamming into that digital hand. The impact shook everything with a deafening crash.
"You actually think that pathetic power can destroy me?" The Dominion Network's voice rang out, each word heavy enough to crush my skull.
"You still don't get it," I said with a cold laugh. "This isn't your power I'm using—it's been mine all along. And you can't touch what's mine."
I squeezed the device harder, feeling that familiar buzz of energy coursing through my hands. This wasn't about throwing punches or breaking things. This was pure willpower—the one thing that could shatter every chain this system had wrapped around me.
The darkness around me started to fracture, and the data streams began glitching out like the broken Network crashing in real time.
"Warning: Core Node failure imminent. The Network will reset."
The Dominion Network's voice cut out, replaced by screaming alarms that meant only one thing—the whole system was about to come crashing down.
"I don't want to reset you," I said firmly. "I want to destroy you completely."
The second I finished talking, the entire Black Vault started shaking like it was tearing itself apart. All that darkness around me began ripping open like torn fabric, showing me what had been lurking underneath this whole time.
The code that kept the Dominion Network running spread out in front of me like a twisted maze, creating paths that disappeared into the depths of this digital hell.
I knew I was standing right in the heart of the Dominion Network now.
And I was just getting warmed up.
