That night, after I said those words, Lucas stared at me for a long time.

So long that a few more ginkgo leaves drifted down from the tree.

"What did you say?" His voice was barely above a whisper, as if he wasn't sure he'd heard me right, or maybe he had, but just couldn't believe it.
