My counterattack had a clear effect. Sophie became much more subdued in the office.

The whispers of envy around her turned into subtle mockery and distance.

The "special" aura she'd just started building was shattered by me without mercy.

A few days later, Edward came home looking grim.

He walked in with suppressed anger.

But I didn't give him a chance to vent. I just asked him calmly what he wanted for dinner.

My calmness seemed to throw him off. The accusations he'd prepared got stuck.

He just tugged irritably at his tie. "Whatever."

The atmosphere that evening was stiff.
