Chapter 3
As he talked, the handsome man looked down at me with this soft, gentle expression.
"Babe, my assistant said you were here for a class reunion, so I came to pick you up. It's supposed to rain tonight, and you're barely dressed for the weather. I'm guessing you didn't bring an umbrella, right?" he asked.
Lennon, our class president, who had been standing off to the side, went completely wide-eyed when he finally got a good look at the man's face.
"Harmony, your husband is Kayden!" he shouted.
Some of our classmates spoke up, confused. "What's going on, Lennon? You know this guy?"
Lennon let out a helpless sigh. "Don't any of you watch the business channel?
"Kayden is the CEO of EverRise Group. It's the top company in Celestria, a world top 500 giant, and he's the richest man in Averidge City. Seriously, none of you recognized him?"
Everyone's expressions shifted fast. A few people who'd seen Kayden on TV suddenly got hyped.
After all, now they had a real billionaire standing right in front of them.
Blake, the one who had been about to propose to me, went paper-white the second he realized who my husband was.
A girl who used to be on good terms with me back in school blurted out, "Harmony, I seriously didn't think you were actually married. And your husband is Kayden, the richest man in Averidge City? Girl, you're blessed."
"Yeah, we totally thought you said you were married just to piss Blake off. Turns out you've been a rich wife this whole time. That's insane luck. If it were me, I wouldn't have picked Blake either."
"Oh my God, you're really a high-society wife now. I can't believe I went to college with someone married to a guy like this. This is wild. I feel lucky just being here."
I kept a polite smile on my face and responded as nicely as I could.
Kayden stood beside me and gently smoothed my skirt before pulling me closer with a protective look. "Did you come here right after your procedure? Rest when we get home."
I nodded. "Okay."
Blake stared at us like he'd been hit by a truck. Watching how naturally Kayden and I moved together made his whole face go dark.
"Harmony, you're unbelievable," he snapped. "To sell your little story, you even paid someone to pretend to be your husband. You must've searched everywhere to find a guy who looks this much like Kayden. Come on, how much did you pay him?
"Need me to reimburse you?"
Hearing Blake spout that shameless nonsense made my blood boil.
Kayden stepped forward and looked down at Blake, his voice low and icy. "Sir, watch your mouth."
I never expected the sweet, obedient Kayden I knew at home to switch into someone completely different in front of a rival.
Blake froze, and when he finally reacted, his face turned bright red. "Who do you think you are? Harmony is my fiancée. What gives you the right to talk down to me?"
Then he actually tried to swing at Kayden.
Too bad for him, Kayden caught his wrist effortlessly and held him in place.
I looked at Blake with pure contempt. "Blake, are you trying to hit him? I told you I'm married. This is my husband, Kayden. You've been provoking him nonstop, and now you want to take a swing at him? What is wrong with you?"
Hearing me defend another man made Blake stare at me like he didn't recognize me. He snapped, "Harmony, have you completely lost it with this whole act?
"I'm your real fiancé. We dated for years, and we were about to get married. And you're standing here defending another man right in front of me, how is that okay?"
