Chapter 2
The day of the concert arrived quickly.
As we entered the venue, Ethan made an excuse about needing the restroom and told me to go ahead and queue up.
"It's still early to go in. I'll wait for you out here," I said.
To my surprise, his face darkened, and he walked off without another word.
I couldn't understand why he was in such a mood again.
Here we were, finally having a chance to go out together.
It wasn't until we took our seats and I noticed the way people were looking at us that I began to understand.
Unlike me, with my heavy, fleshy face, Ethan was stylishly dressed and handsome.
Sometimes when we went out, people mistook me for his mother.
They'd even ask for his contact right in front of me, without a second thought.
To most, we were the furthest thing from a "perfect match."
"Do you feel embarrassed to be seen with me?" I asked, watching as he pulled a pair of sunglasses from his pocket.
"A little. Can't you try to lose some weight, Scarlett? Other guys have girlfriends who are either pretty or have great figures. Look at yourself."
Something inside me slowly shattered.
"But you were the one who always told me not to diet. You said I was cute this way, a little chubby."
"Only those with good figures deserve to be called cute. What you are is a pig trying to be cute, and it's disgusting."
I never imagined he could say something so cruel.
I had gained this weight because of him. When he was suffering from kidney failure, I gave him one of my kidneys to save him. After the donation, my recovery was difficult, and the heavy doses of hormonal medication caused my body to swell.
Every time I tried to lose weight, Ethan would stop me, insisting I was cuter with the extra pounds.
For the sake of what he called "cute," I had let myself stay this way.
I said, "If that's how you feel, then just give me the ticket back."
If he was so ashamed of me, he didn't deserve to enjoy anything I provided for him.
Seeing the stage so close, Ethan's face paled, and he quickly reverted to his usual tone.
"It's not that I'm ashamed of you, Scarlett. I just think you'd be healthier if you lost some weight."
I pressed my lips together and said nothing more.
The concert atmosphere was electric.
Ethan, who rarely sang around me, knew every word to every song.
During the intermission, his idol, Sofia, announced she would pick a few lucky audience members for some interaction, essentially projecting them on the big screen.
Many aspiring influencers saw this as a chance for exposure.
"Scarlett, I need to tell you something."
Ethan's face was still flushed with excitement, but his tone was icy.
"If they put me on the screen, you have to pretend you don't know me, okay?"
I was puzzled.
He sounded so sure he would be chosen.
I wanted to ask more, but he had already shifted away.
He was deliberately putting distance between us.
A moment later, the arena erupted.
I looked up and saw Ethan's face—and part of mine—on the massive screen.
"Wow, I can't believe there's such a handsome guy here in Yuohs City!"
Sofia on stage was just as excited as the crowd.
"Are you here alone today?"
It was a common question for idols to ask, but Ethan, facing the camera, nodded firmly.
Then he held up a single finger, signaling "one."
I sat there, frozen.
Here alone?
Then what was I?
An ATM? Thin air?
"Oh, so it seems this handsome guy is single!"
Sofia added with interest.
I turned my stiff neck slowly to look at Ethan.
He had taken off his sunglasses before the screen lit up.
Now, with his devastatingly handsome face, he nodded shyly.
The crowd screamed even louder.
I couldn't take it anymore.
"Ethan," I said, my voice low but audible to those around us, "have you forgotten something? I'm your girlfriend."
The people around us, also visible on the screen, stared with mouths agape, utterly stunned.
