Chapter 2
Almost without realizing it, guilt flashed across Ethan's face. He reached for my hand, his fingers brushing against my skin as if he wanted to tend to the wound.
"I'm sorry, Sarah," he said quietly. "I didn't mean to hurt you.
"I just... I got too angry. Come on. Let's go put some ointment on that."
I shot him an icy glare. As soon as he moved closer, I snatched his right hand and pressed a knife to it.
I warned, "You'd better get ready for a divorce.
"Right now, I'm going to see that body. If you don't take me there, I'll destroy your right hand, and you can never be a doctor again."
My face showed ruthless resolve. No one could keep me from seeing that body.
"You want a divorce? Just because of what happened today?" Ethan asked.
For a moment, Ethan looked completely lost. Then, when he caught the cold indifference in my eyes, he was suddenly struck by the realization that there was no love left in them.
I caught the pain in Ethan's eyes, and for a second, I spaced out. I wondered how I turned into this person he couldn't even recognize anymore.
It was probably because I had to take care of Lucas all alone.
It was because of the cold shoulder Ethan gave me and the endless chores. I hardly felt human anymore.
I ended up exactly what he thought I was—a crazy woman.
My mind wandered back to those early days of our marriage.
No matter how busy Ethan was at work, he still got up every morning to make me cereal. He said there was something wrong with my stomach, and I had to take care of it carefully to get better.
He kept up the routine for half a year, and he actually healed my stomach issue.
The first year after we tied the knot, I got into a car accident. Ethan broke down crying and kept saying he wished it had been his leg shattered instead of mine.
"Since I made a vow at our wedding to stay with you until the very end, I'll never abandon you," Ethan had promised.
I really thought I was marrying for love, but somewhere along the way, everything started falling apart.
It wasn't until I accidentally found Ethan's diary that the truth finally hit me.
It turned out I was never the one he truly cared about. I was just the second choice.
Back when I was about to give birth, I saw Ethan seriously picking out baby supplies. For a moment, I thought maybe he was finally coming back to me.
It turned out he sent every single thing he picked out to Emily instead.
Ethan never cared about me or my child.
So letting go of him was what I should've done ages ago.
"Dr. Cooper, it's been almost three hours. If we wait any longer, the transplant will fail even if the surgery goes well. We have to act now," someone said.
Emily started to beg me again.
She said, "Sarah, I'm begging you! Just let Ethan do the surgery first.
"My daughter is everything to me. I can't lose her.
"You're a mother too. How can you not understand what I'm going through?"
Emily's pitiful look instantly made all the nearby doctors and nurses take her side, their faces shifting from indifference to sharp disapproval as they glared at me.
The head nurse said to me, "Sarah, keep this up and we'll have no choice but to call the cops!"
With the knife still in my hand, tension flickered across Ethan's face as he tried to calm me down.
He said, "Sarah, can't we just wait until after the surgery to talk about all this?
"Look, I know I've ignored you too much lately. I'll change and spend more time with you."
"No need for you to call the cops. I already did," I said coldly, staring straight at Emily and trying to see through whatever darkness she was hiding.
I added, "Taking a glance at the body won't take long. Who's really wasting time here?
"You've gone to outrageous lengths to keep me away from the body. What are you trying to hide?"
My words made the doctors and nurses pause.
It was just one quick look.
If Emily were really worried about her daughter, she'd urge the old man to let me take a quick look.
She looked at the puzzled eyes of these people, and there was more and more panic in her eyes.
Just then, the cops showed up.
"Who reported a murder?" one of the officers asked.
The moment the word "murder" hit the air, everyone's expressions shifted.
"It was me," I said, voice unwavering. "I suspect that the child inside is my son, who has been missing for three days. I request a paternity test."
I was being serious with the police.
"Officer, that's my grandson inside," the old man said.
He looked so pitiful as he spoke, almost on the verge of tears.
The cop tapped into the system and, sure enough, it showed the old man really did have a grandson on record.
"Officer, please. You have to stand up for me. She keeps interfering, and because of her, my daughter's heart transplant hasn't started," Emily cried.
She sobbed, tears streaming down her face.
"Ma'am, this is unacceptable. Let the doctor go now and let him do his job," the officer snapped.
He was being very harsh.
Ethan used the chaos to break free from my grip, giving me a cold, disappointed glare.
He said, "Sarah, I can't believe you've gone totally insane. Emily's done nothing to you, and now you're actually trying to get her daughter killed.
"How did I ever fall for someone like you?"
He said I was insane.
Maybe he was right. I'd been losing my mind ever since Lucas was missing.
Without hesitation, I spun the knife and pressed it against my own neck, saying to the officer, "I have to see the body.
"If you don't let me in, I'll kill myself right here in front of everyone!"
Gritting my teeth, I pressed the blade harder. A thin crimson line blossomed on my neck, and blood showed up on my skin.
Seeing me threatening my own life, the cop didn't hesitate for a second. He escorted me straight into the operating room.
