Chapter 3
Chapter 3 Shadows Of The Past
The scent of sea salt and freshly baked bread filled the Marquez Café, a haven of warmth and normalcy in the small town of Santa Azul. For Amara, the café was her sanctuary a place where no one knew her by her real name. Here, she was Elena Marquez, a woman with no past, no attachments. A woman who had escaped the cold, calculating world of Damien Blackwood.
No. Amara.
Amara Blackwood. She had to remind herself of the name she had once been forced to wear like a prison. A name she had run from.
Her breath hitched as the door chimed, and a familiar yet forbidden presence swept into the café. Her pulse stuttered as her heart recognized the one person who could shatter everything.
Damien.
The man she had once loved. The man who had betrayed her. The man she had escaped.
He stood tall, his dark suit out of place in the warm, laid back atmosphere of the café. His storm gray eyes were fixed on her with an intensity that made her stomach churn. Amara tried to keep her expression neutral, but her heartbeat was a drum in her ears.
"Can I help you?" she asked, forcing herself to sound confident.
Damien’s gaze darkened as he stepped toward her, his every movement exuding the power he still commanded. "You don’t recognize me?" he asked, voice smooth, but laced with something colder.
Her breath caught in her throat, but she forced a confused frown. Don’t panic. He can’t know. He can’t know the truth.
"I’m sorry… have we met before?" she asked, tilting her head slightly, feigning confusion.
His face hardened. "Amara," he said with a low growl, stepping closer. "Don’t play games with me. I’ve spent the last three years looking for you. And now… I find you here, pretending to be someone else?"
She stepped back, feeling the tension between them grow, her heart thundering in her chest. "My name is Elena," she said, firming her stance, her voice deliberately shaky. "I don’t know you. I think you’re mistaken."
Damien’s jaw clenched. His eyes scanned her face as if he were searching for the woman he had once known, the woman he had married, the woman who had disappeared.
She swallowed, holding her ground. "I’ve… I’ve had an accident. I don’t remember anything from before. My life, my past… it’s all gone."
Damien studied her for a long, tense moment. Then, with a slow shake of his head, he muttered, "Amnesia? You expect me to believe that?"
Before she could answer, the back door of the café opened, and a small, high-pitched voice interrupted the heavy silence.
"Mama!"
Amara’s heart dropped into her stomach. She turned quickly to see Luca, her husband, standing in the doorway, holding their son in his arms.
The boy, barely three, looked around the room with wide eyes before his gaze fell on her. "Mama!" he repeated, holding his tiny arms out to her.
A knot formed in Amara’s throat. She had hidden Leo from the world for three years, but now, Damien was here. And her son was standing in front of him.
"Hey, buddy," Luca said softly, adjusting his hold on their son as he approached her. He caught sight of Damien, his brow furrowing slightly, but he didn’t let go of his calm, protective demeanor. "Everything alright?"
Damien’s eyes locked onto Luca, and Amara could feel the tension snap tight like a wire about to break.
Luca had once been her father’s right-hand man, a loyal soldier in the world of business and power that Amara had fled. Damien would know that. Damien would know Luca had been one of his enemies.
But that wasn’t the issue now.
The issue was the child.
Damien’s gaze flickered between Amara and Luca’s son, and for the first time, his steely mask cracked. His face twisted into something dark and dangerous.
"You have a child," he said, his voice raw with disbelief. "This is your son?"
Amara’s heart hammered in her chest as she met Damien’s eyes. She could see the thoughts turning in his mind, his fury brewing.
"Leo, sweetheart," she said softly, bending down to gather her son into her arms. "Come on, let’s go sit over here, okay?"
But Leo resisted, his little hands reaching for Damien. "Daddy?" he asked in confusion.
Damien’s expression froze, and Amara felt her blood run cold.
He didn’t know. He couldn’t know.
But now, the truth was standing in front of him.
A mix of shock and rage flickered across his face as he took a step forward. "Daddy? You think you can stand there, holding my son and pretending nothing ever happened?" he spat. "I gave you everything, Amara. And you—" His words cut off, as if he couldn’t quite find the right one to describe the betrayal he was feeling.
Luca’s calm expression remained unchanged, though his hand tightened on the boy. "This is none of your business, Blackwood," he said, his voice low and cold.
"None of my business?" Damien’s voice was incredulous. He looked between them again, his eyes narrowing. "You left me. You disappeared without a trace. And now you think you can walk into my life with my son and pretend nothing ever happened?"
Amara took a deep breath, her heart aching, but her voice was firm as she stepped forward. "Damien," she said quietly, but with an authority that made him pause. "You’re right. I left. I disappeared." She paused, looking him directly in the eye, her words sharp and unwavering. "But Leo is mine. And Luca’s."
Damien’s eyes widened, the shock of her words striking him like a blow. His mouth moved but no words came out at first. Finally, he managed to choke out, "You—Luca? This is your child? After everything—" His voice rose in disbelief. "I thought I was the one you—"
"Don’t." Amara’s voice was low but commanding, cutting off his words. "You don’t get to rewrite the past. Leo is not yours, Damien. He never was."
Damien’s eyes were like steel, his jaw clenched so tight it looked as if it would break. The tension in the room was palpable. Amara had never seen him so undone, so vulnerable, and for a split second, a pang of something almost like sympathy crossed her mind. But it was quickly replaced by the fire of determination.
"You think this is what you deserve, Amara?" he growled, his hand shaking with the effort to remain composed. "You think you can just disappear with my son, build a new life, and forget everything you did to me? Forget everything we had?"
Amara took a step forward, her posture unwavering. "I’m not forgetting anything, Damien. I’m just moving on. And so is Leo. And Luca is a better father than you ever could be."
Damien stared at her, eyes blazing. His hands clenched and unclenched at his sides, fighting the urge to lash out. But something in the way she stood there, the way she held her son, stopped him.
For a long moment, he simply stood there, lost in the weight of her words, before he finally spoke again, quieter, colder. "This isn’t over, Amara. You can’t hide forever. I will find you. I will make you pay."
Luca stepped closer, his hand resting firmly on Amara’s shoulder. "You’ve been warned, Damien. Leave us alone. Or I’ll make sure you regret it."
Damien’s gaze flickered to Luca, then back to Amara. The last, heated words lingered in the air before he turned and stalked out of the café, the door slamming behind him with a force that shook the room.
Amara’s legs gave way, and she sank into the chair beside Luca, her body trembling as the adrenaline drained from her veins. Her son, still clinging to her, nestled into her arms, sensing her distress.
Luca’s hand remained on her shoulder, steady and reassuring. "He’ll be back," he said, his voice calm but heavy with warning. "But he won’t get to take what’s ours. Not now. Not ever."
Amara nodded, her heart still racing, but for the first time in years, she felt a flicker of something stronger than fear hope. And, for Leo, she would fight. She would fight until her last breath.
