Chapter 3
When Mia burst into the room, I was deathly pale, my lips already tinged with blue beneath the oxygen mask.
"Chloe, stay with me," Mia cried out, frantically adjusting my oxygen and slamming the emergency call button.
The on-duty doctor rushed in, and after some desperate emergency treatment, my vitals finally began to stabilize.
"Mia, Ms. Whitfield's emotional state is far too unstable. She must remain calm, otherwise—" the doctor said, shaking his head and letting his words trail off.
I knew exactly what he meant.
Otherwise, I'd die.
Just like Tessa said, I'd be waiting quietly for death.
But suddenly, I didn't want to die anymore.
"Chloe, don't be scared. I'll go find Dr. Ashford. He'll know what to do," Mia said, her eyes rimmed with tears.
"No," I said suddenly, my voice hoarse.
Mia froze.
"Mia, do you trust me?" I asked.
"Of course, I do, dear," Mia replied.
"Then, can you do me a favor?" I rasped, struggling to pull a slip of paper from under my pillow. "Can you get these meds checked out? I need to know what I've really been taking all these years."
Every medication I'd taken over the past decade was listed on that note.
Mia took the slip, her hands trembling. "Chloe, did you figure something out?"
I didn't answer. I just closed my eyes.
I needed proof.
I needed hard evidence, the kind no one could argue with.
Three days later, Mia snuck back in with the test results.
She stared at the report, tears falling nonstop. "Chloe, these pills are just plain vitamins, and some glucose Ivs.
"How is this possible? Chloe, what have they really been giving you all these years?"
I took the report, my fingers running over those cold, clinical numbers.
Vitamin B, Vitamin C, glucose? Not a single one was actually meant to treat me.
Tessa hadn't lied to me.
Reid really had treated me like a lab rat, just a control group.
I was just a lab rat, a test subject.
"Mia," I said, lifting my head. My eyes were dry, but I felt strangely calm. "I need your help with something else."
"Just go ahead, Chloe. I'll do anything for you," Mia said.
"Can you help me reach someone?" I said, giving her the name. "Nolan Hart, my parents' lawyer."
Nolan arrived the following evening.
He was in his fifties, his hair almost completely white, but his gaze was still razor-sharp.
The moment he saw me, his eyes filled with tears. "Chloe, what happened to you? How did you get so thin?"
"Nolan," I said, managing a weak smile. "I'm sorry I haven't been in touch all these years."
"Sweetheart, you've been sick. I understand," Nolan said, settling down by my bedside. "Is there something you need? Why did you reach out all of a sudden?"
I stayed quiet for a few seconds, then told him everything that had happened to me over the past ten years, every detail, holding nothing back.
When I finished, Nolan's face darkened with fury. He slammed his fist on the table. "Animals, Absolute animals.
"When your parents passed away, they asked me to look after you. I saw how well Reid treated you, and since he was a doctor, I trusted him completely. I gave him full guardianship and control of your inheritance without a second thought.
"I never thought he'd treat you this way,"
"Nolan, it's too late for that now," I said calmly. "I need you to help me with a few things."
"Just tell me," he said.
"First, I need you to investigate all the assets my parents left behind, including tracking the flow of that 3-million-dollar medical fund," I said.
I added, "Second, collect evidence of Reid's embezzlement and falsification of my medical records.
"Third, help me arrange a transfer to the best hospital at home."
"Fourth," I paused, "Help me file a lawsuit."
Nolan's eyes shone with both pride and heartache. "Chloe, you've really grown up."
"I was forced to," I said with a bitter smile.
"Don't worry, Chloe. I'll make things right for you," Nolan said, squeezing my hand. "Your parents are watching over you from above. They'll be looking out for you."
